His eyes were the same color as the sea
in a postcard someone sends you
when they love you, but not enough
to stay.

THE WALK  from the school gates to the doors of the school building was the most self-conscious journey of Kate's day. Some people smiled, some pointed at her with curious faces, chubby faces she had seen before the summer were now leaner and taut.

The banners on the school lawn had been put up, fluttering in the cold nipping breeze over their heads as eager wannabe cheerleaders swarmed her and Caroline.

Crowds hadn't been a problem for Kate before, but drooling masses of skimpily dressed high-pitched sirens had always been. Caroline quickly pulled her into the hallways, one wave and an entitled glare dismissing the new recruits to the minions group.

"Are you okay?"

Like every time, Kate smiled her practiced smile and lied through her teeth. "I'm fine."

Caroline hugged her one last time. "I'll go get our books from the lockers, you might wanna drop by Ms. Jamie's office."

She couldn't help but groan, "New student?"
