The hallway outside her ajar door flickered with light from a lantern.

Her mother stood at the door, nightdress billowing from the wind of the open window. In one hand she held a swaying lantern throwing golden light on her bulbous cheeks and wry smile. The other hand extended towards Kate cordially.
Come on now darling, everyone's already downstairs.
Eyes pierced into hers. This was her mother, from probably ten years ago. Young, yet to be touched by the growing pains of flowers she made, beautiful petals that protected rotten secrets with thorns.
