In The Alleyway

"Y/N!" I saw Sebastian and Alexander say. I smiled and waved, then awkwardly stood near the entrance of the two buildings. They both looked at each other, then had a conversation I couldn't hear. Alexander signed, "Do you know Sebastian?", I nodded and smiled. "He and I were in maths together,". Alexander seemed fidgety at my comment, but he continued to chat. Lucian seemed to be glaring daggers right into me, while Ezekiel was completely oblivious to his surroundings, head bobbing to the music he was listening to. Sebastian looked at me, then appeared to ask Alexander a question. He nodded and began to sign. "Sebastian wants to tell you about us.", Sebastian proceeded to talk, while Alexander translated. Turns out, they have all been friends since they first joined the school in year 7. Ezekiel chimed in occasionally, letting me know of all the embarrassing phases and moments they went through.

Lucian must've stopped the conversation because they all looked at him. I looked at his lips and followed what he was saying. "Why are we letting some random girl know about our lives? It's not like she's special or something. Besides her disability, of course. She's very special in that region." He sneered, looking at me when he said 'disability'. I looked back up, smiled while tears threatened to spill, and said my goodbyes. I'm clearly not wanted here. As I was walking away, I felt someone grabbing my wrist. It was Sebastian, and he seemed upset. I read his lips to see him apologize. "It's okay," I said. "I'm sorry for being here.". He then seemed angry and stormed back to Lucian, where they proceeded to have a heated argument. Alexander and Ezekiel were upset too and it looked like they joined Sebastian's side. I decided to leave them alone, and walk to my last class before the bell went.

I walked alone, down a path to a large building. The last period was biology, a subject that I enjoyed. Perhaps this could distract me from the events that unfolded. I walked inside, then up a flight of stairs. The halls were quite crowded, it took a while for me to get to my classroom. Once I was in my classroom, I sat down and waited for the class to begin. Soon enough students poured in and took their seats, and we began. The class was a bit chaotic, thanks to it being the end of the day, but I managed to ignore most of the shenanigans. Luckily, none of the boys were in the class, so there wouldn't be any awkwardness. I daydreamed, pretending to listen to the teacher droning on. My first day has been pretty eventful. I got teased, I made three potential friends, and I got made fun of some more. I wonder if they only took interest in me because I'm deaf...However, none of them knew when they first met me. Ugh, I'm overthinking again.

Once the bell rang, everyone left immediately. I left the classroom once the rush ended, and headed to my bus. I walked in and sat at the front of the bus. Most kids fight tooth and nail to sit near the back, and I'd rather not deal with that. I stared out the window, hardly regarding the person sitting next to me. I only turned around when I felt a rough tap on my shoulder. It was Lucian. I inwardly groaned as I thought about what he said earlier. It made me think, why is he sitting next to me? He looked at me without anger on his face, but sadness. "I'm sorry, Y/N." He said clearly, making sure I could lipread. "I'm really sorry, I was an ass. I shouldn't have said those things to you." I smiled and took his hand. "It's okay, honestly. I really appreciate you apologizing. Besides, I've heard worse." I joked at the end. He suddenly appeared irate and looked at me with fire in his eyes. "Like what? And by who?" He seemed protective over me, which was odd since earlier he was complaining about how much of a nuisance I am. I told him about one instance when I was about 10 years old.

"I was reading a book, and a kid who's known to be quite harsh with his words came up to me. He ripped my hearing aids out and called me a disabled deaf-and-dumb. Not the most creative name, I must admit." I giggled. "The worst part wasn't the name itself, but the meaning behind it." I voiced. Lucian then hugged me. "I'm so sorry." That was all he said. I hugged him back, letting him know he was forgiven.

The bus stopped, about a seven-minute walk from my house. I got off, and Lucian followed me. "I, um, want to walk you home, if that's okay." He said, suddenly shy. I nodded and smiled, and we walked in silence. Shortly we arrived at my house, and he meekly spoke. "I'm sorry again about today. I'll see you tomorrow, Y/N?" I smiled, overjoyed at his kind words.

"Yes. of course!".

It was 10 pm now, and I was lying in bed. I was exhausted after today's events, but content. I took out my hearing aids and got ready for bed. As I started to drift off, I felt like I was being watched. I had forgotten to close the curtains, but I was too lazy to get up and close them. I fell asleep, excited for the next day.
