"Sir? What's happening?"
Mr. Ryan takes a deep breath. "Kids... It's not safe. Authorities aren't coming-"
"What? Why?" Denise asks.
"The sick, people like Mrs. Williams, they're... They're not ok, they're... Monsters. They try to kill people, eat them.
When I was downstairs, the radio was on, but no one was there. I heard a distress call, an officer from where the shooting was happening. He said how the sick, they were tearing up the paramedics who were trying to save them. He said no matter how many times they'd shoot one, they'd only die from a shot to the head."

"So, is there anyone left?"
Mr. Ryan shakes his head solemnly.
"The officer on the radio was the only one left, but he... The signal ended gruesomely."

"So now what do we do?" I ask.
"We leave. We need to get to somewhere safe. There's infected in the building. Some at that door, just waiting for the broom I put there to snap. The shooting was near, which means more will be coming. Grab some baseball bats and hockey sticks from the sports chest, boys." Evan, Charlie, Tim, and Mark go to the chest.

"Ugh, sir, what are we doing with those?" Zoë asks, still shaking.

"Hun," Mr. Ryan puts his hand on her shoulder. "These, Things... They're not people anymore. They've gone mad. They... They'll kill you if they get the chance."
Whimpers escape from Zoë.
"So don't give them that chance! If one gets near you, or anyone else here, you hit it as hard as you can with your bat. And you must hit them in the head."

"But, they're people-"
"No, Zoë," Denise says. "they're not."

"Ok kids, this way."
We follow Mr. Ryan down the hall, away from the door with the peop- things. I take a quick look at them, and I understand. They're all like Mrs. W, some worse. They all are bloody and sickly pale, viciously chomping and clawing at the doors.
I recognize my second grade teacher.

All the classrooms we pass have locked their doors. We tried to warn the first few, let them know, take them with us. But when everyone refused, we stopped trying.

We continue until we reach the stairwell at the opposite end of the building and make our way outside. Brisk fall air courses through me.

"Where to?" Evan asks.
"We should make our way to somewhere where the military will go, somewhere near the general population and that's big enough to set up medical care."

"Costco?" Denise suggests.
"Bingo. But before we go there, we should stop somewhere to get some supplies, like food, water, weapons. Is anyone's house between here and Costco?"
"Mine." Savannah says.
"Then that's our course of action." Mr. Ryan pulls out his car keys, but then realizes that there's eighteen of us.
"Guess we're going by foot."

I want to see my family, I think. Know that they're safe. I realize now that all those zombie shows and movies that Olivia made me watch with her, that they might be coming to life. Is this really happening? Are we really in a zombie apocalypse?

I break from my thoughts when Olivia nudges me. "If this really is the zombie apocalypse, then we're in it together. We'll keep an eye out for each other, won't let anything happen to the other." She whispers. "Deal?" I turn my head to face my best friend, her baby blue eyes staring back at me, her blonde hair flowing softly in the wind behind her.

I whisper back, "Deal."
