I brush off the dust that has devoured the old books. I pick through the pile, glancing at the covers, one by one. 'Gone With the Wind', 'the Outsiders', 'To Kill A Mocking Bird', 'The Giver'. I take 'To Kill A Mocking Bird' and shove it into my backpack.
We spent the night in the attic. We could still hear the moans of the dead, only inches below. It had been the most restless night since the outbreak. I had a terrifying nightmare.
I dreamt Olivia and I had met up with the rest of our group, only, they were all turned. We had to fight them off. We were devastated. But the dream didn't end there. I saw him, but it was too late. Mr. Ryan, zombified, had grabbed Olivia's arm and opposite shoulder and dug his teeth into her neck, tearing at her flesh. I slayed the teacher, and Olivia fell to the ground. I sat on my knees and held my dying friend close in my arms. My clothes were stained with her blood. she placed her hand on my cheek and stared into my eyes for what seam to be eternity. Then her body went limp, and her hand slid off my face and onto her chest.
I sat there, cradling my lifeless friend in my arms, not wanting to let go. Tears were streaming down my face. I promised... I repeated those two words, over and over in my head like a broken record.
I woke with a start. It was all too real. I turned to find Olivia, sound asleep, her chest raising and lowering at a steady pace. I could never loose her. I couldn't sleep again that night. I sat under the circular window and read the first few chapters of To Kill A Mockingbird.
About an hour after sunrise, olivia awakened. "You're up early." She said with a grin.
We had a few crackers and some water for breakfast, trying to save the little food we had. About an hour or so later, we began to head out.
"Well, we've got no other way out. Guess that window's our best bet." Olivia says. I walk over to the window to see what's out there.
"If we get out of this window, we can get onto the roof. From there, we can jump down to the garage roof. Its not a big drop from the garage to the ground." I tell her.
I bend my arm so my elbow is ready the break the glass. I've always seen people do this in movies. How hard can it be? I pull my arm back and thrust it into the window, shattering it completely.
We crawl through the window and out onto the roof. All the walkers are still in the house, so we're good for that. Olivia jumps onto the garage roof and then I. We both jump onto the ground and begin to run away from that cruel house
We finally stop after about five minutes of running. "Those guys should be waiting a few blocks this way. Hopefully they haven't left without us." I tell Olivia after I've caught my breath.
Olivia and I walk another block before we spot two walkers. We each go after a walker and jab them in the eye with our knifes. They both fall to the ground with a thud. "That's kind of odd. There's usually never just two." She says.
Ask and you shall receive. We turn the corner to find about two dozen walkers. They all turn and begin to hobble towards us. "Run!" We bolt across the street and run for our lives, quit literally. From what I can remember, the street we're on is east of Costco. Were going to have to run down a side street to get back on track.
"Turn here!" I shout. We turn on to Wilbur way and don't slow down until weve gotten a good distance away. "That was a scare." I say through heavy breaths. "Good thing is we're still on the right way to Costco." But Olivia is focused on something else. I follow her gaze until I spot what she's looking at.
Halfway up the driveway a few doors down, there lay a cut up walker. But that's not the issue. On the garage door, there's something written in blood. It takes me a while to make out what it says, but when I do, I can't take my eyes off it.
"Lukas, olivia, hoard passed by. Couldn't stay. Go to Costco. We'll be there. -E"
