They're gone. They just... Left.
Olivia must have seen the dread on my face. "We'll find them."
"I know. Its just... I'm worried. I don't want what happened to Mr. Ryan happen to anyone else."
"Well, I guess we just got to hope. Hope that they can watch out for each other until they get to Costco." She says. "C'mon, we're not gonna get there any faster by sitting around talking. Let's go." She smiles, and we get on our way.
***
We didn't get far before we ran into another problem.
We only got to the end of the street. Four walkers met us at the intersection. "You know, I'm getting really tired of all these things in our way." I whisper.
"Me too, but we can get around these ones."
I hear her talk, but I've had enough. I rush to the closest walker and stab it in the eye, letting it crumple to the ground.
We take the walkers out one by one. We had a close call once. A walker almost ripped my arm off, but thankfully olivia was there.
"I know your getting annoyed, but that was really reckless. We could've been killed!"
I know. I'm sorry. Its just... Its the same nightmare. Over and over again!" I can feel tears swell up in my eyes. "We run. Hoard. Turn back. Run again. It feels like it'll never end. If we hadn't taken out this hoard, we would've turned onto another street and find another hoard! Its just-"
I get cut off when Olivia pulls me into a hug. "I know how you feel," She says, her voice muffled through my shoulder. "It feels like there's no hope. Like we're just pawns in some crazy game." She pushes away and looks me dead in the eyes.
"But let me tell you this. As long as there is life, there will be hope. And because somewhere, somewhere, there is always life, thats means there will always be hope." She wipes away some tears that have fallen down her cheeks.
"Thanks. I needed that." As long as I have Olivia, I know I'll have hope. "Now, what do you say we finally get to Costco?"
***
Olivia notices it first. Two houses down the block, there's a parked police car. We head over to it and look into the window. The officer lays there, eyes closed, head resting on his shoulder. I knock on the glass, only to get a nasty surprise.
The officer's eyes whip open and he slams his face to the glass. I almost fall over from the sudden scare. There's a gruesome bite wound on the part of the neck he was previously hiding.
"What are we going to do? Should we just leave it?" I ask.
"No. We should put it out of its misery. Plus, what if it gets free? It could be the walker that bites me or you some day."
"Alright. You open the door and stand behind it. I'll stand here and take it out." I stand a few feet away from the car and the walker. Olivia puts her hands on the handle and I arm myself with my knife.
"One... Two... Now!" Olivia rips at the door and it opens swiftly. The walker struggles to get out, so I take the opportunity to impale it through the skull. Its body goes limp and I shove it to the ground.
I look into the car and see something laying on the passengers seat. Its slick black color made me almost think it wasn't there. but when I went to grab it, I could feel the cool metal in my hand and I knew it was real.
"It's a gun."
