I wake to several pares of eyes starring down at me.
"Rise and shine, lukey!" Savannah's the first to greet me as I rise and she gives me a tight embrace.
"Glad to see you both made it." Evan shakes my hand.
"Of course we did!" I greet the rest of our friends, but stop when I realize people are missing.
"Where's charlie and Delilah?" I start to panic, already thinking the worse.
Cecilia pops her head up from the ladder. "Don't worry, they're just doing their jobs. They're runners. Every morning two groups go to the surrounding areas to find supplies. Should be back in the afternoon.
"Glad to see your first night was pleasant. But its time for the day to start. Everyone, go get some grub and then go to your jobs. Olivia and Lukas, you two are new, so were going to see what your strong suits are. Olivia, you can work in the kitchen. Find Joe, he'll show you the ropes. Lukas, you'll be working on building the walls outside. Your going to need a gun , so go to the defence widget. After that, head outside. Find Winona." Cecilia then climbs down the ladder and we all follow.

After our brisk breakfast of cereal, we all go our separate ways and to our jobs. After learning Savannah and I have the same job the two of us head to the defense widget. When we get there, The man hands each of us a pistol.
"Yeah, I'm not really the best with guns..." I say looking at the weapon.
"Well your gonna have to learn eventually. Better sooner rather then later. Now get going."
When Savannah and I get outside, it looks completely different from yesterday. I can see About a dozen people around the parking lot, most likely more around back, hammering wood planks and metal beams into the ground and into each other. Walls.
Savannah taps me on the shoulder. "I'll be over on the left side. Winona's over there on the right. See ya tonight." Savannah runs over to the left, waving to several people and fist bumping a man when she gets there. Look who's already made friends.
I walk over to who Savannah said was Winona. She's a bigger black lady, with her hair pulled up and tied with a bandana, leaving it loose and frizzy on top.
"H-hello ma'am" I say. She jumps a little then turns.
"Sweet baby Jesus, child! You made me almost jump out my skin!" She says, her hand on her chest. I can hear a southern accent in her voice.
"Sorry ma'am."
She chuckles a little. "Oh, that's quite alright, sweet pea. At least you're polite." She shakes my hand. "So you must be Lukas." She kisses her teeth. "I gotta say, I thought you'd be blonde. And taller."
"Uh... Sorry?"
"Nothing to be sorry about, child. Let me introduce myself. I'm Winona Gotti. Come, let me show you what we've gotta do."

After about ten minutes of hammering, winona breaks the silence.
"So, seeing as we'll be spending some time together, why don't we get to know each other."
"OK, what do you want to know?"
"Whatever you feel like sharing, sweet pea."
"Um, well, I've lived here in Vancouver my whole life. My family never really went on many trips. I've always wanted to go to England, though. But I guess I'll never get the chance anymore, seeing as how the world is.-"
Winona puts her hand on my hand, stopping me from my work.
"Hey, don't ever say that again. Ever. I don't care how messed up the world may be, I still believe that one day, things will get better. And so should you."
"OK, I'll try. Now, how about you, where are you from?"
She stretches out her arms above her head, looking around.
"Hmm. Well, I was born in new Orleans and lived there until I was twenty. My mother had died, so my sister, Naomi, and I moved here. After afew years, I met Ted. Then, just last year, we had Jamie. My two boys were the loves of my life. Oh, how Ted could play the piano!" She closes her eyes and starts moving her hips and shoulders, whistling a little tune.
She slowly stops and looks at the sky.
"Oh, but those times are over, and this happened. The night before the outbreak, Ted and I went on a date, so we had Naomi babysit Jamie. The next morning was our first experience with the dead 'ems. Five of them were banging on our back door.
Ted and I went to Naomi's house, and he went to the door, but they weren't there. While he was out there, a hoard had surrounded my car. I could hear Ted yelling, trying to get them away from me. He succeeded, but they surrounded him." She took a pause to wipe away the tears from her eyes.
"If this is too hard for you to share, then don't. Its alright."
She looks at me. "No... I need to tell someone... to get this off my chest.
Ted was yelling to me as they swarmed him. Drive! Drive sweetie...
I love you...
So, I drove. I didn't stop driving, or crying, until I was out of gas. I ended up here. But I still don't know what happened to Jamie or Naomi. If they're dead or alive." She takes a deep breath.
Suddenly, a car screeches across the road and into the parking lot. Winona puts down her hammer and puts her hand over her mouth.
"What? What's wrong?" I ask.
"They're back early. That's never a good thing." She says under her breath.
Three people emerge from the car.
"Help! They yell. Several people run out from inside the building and met the people at the car. Winona and I go too.
"What's wrong, son?" Its Barkley, along with those who came out from the building. I see that Scout was one of the men who came out of the car.
"We have a problem." He turns his head to the car and then back to us.
"One of the kids is shot."
