TEACHING GIRLFRIEND READER TO FIGHT

Warnings: a mention of imaginary harassment, talking of killing people, also not happy with this but I'm not happy with almost anything I've done in months so I guess it's just my self-criticism talking.

"Watch out for your wrists, Y/N, don't bend them," Kaz told you as you began a new match with a punching bag. "You can sprain them easily if you're careless. And put your left leg more at the back, you can keep your balance better."

You stopped for a moment to follow his instructions, before looking over at him standing there, with the sleeves of his shirt rolled up to his elbows as he inspected you. You'd been practicing self-defense together for two days now, Kaz had said that he wants to rest easy that you're safe in case of an attack and so far it was going fairly well.

"Like this?" you asked, and Kaz nodded. You resumed assaulting the bag, imagining it was some big bad brute from the Dime Lions who just tried to harass you.

"Don't raise your chin too high." Kaz instructed again. "A punch to the throat isn't ideal to get."

You chuckled, lowering your chin. "You have given a lot of them probably."

You knew Kaz smirked even though you didn't look at him. "My cane is useful in that even with chins that are down."

Suddenly, Kaz placed his cane on the punching bag, making you stop and he nodded towards the corner of the training room. You frowned.

"Jesper and Inej got you some weapons to try. Knives, guns, a staff for learning how to block." he told you, gesturing you to go look over to the weapons. Your hand grazed over some of them but you couldn't bring yourself to pick any of them up.

"I'm not sure I'll be able to use these properly..." you muttered, turning back around to face him.

"Jesper and Inej will help you if you want to try any of them. You won't survive out there with your fists alone, Y/N. I fight with my cane and might use a gun sometimes, but I've done it for a decade and was fueled by the will of revenge and not being afraid to die. But you're a beginner with fighting, and my girlfriend. You're a sitting duck if - and when - our relationship will come out. And it will eventually, nothing stays hidden forever in the Barrel."

You bit your lip, nodding slowly. "Okay then." You sighed, picking up one of the knives and holding it carefully between your fingers. It felt heavier than it looked, and you knew it's something that could cut through flesh like a hot knife through butter. "Do I really need to learn all this? I don't want to kill anyone."

Kaz sighed. "It's necessary to know how to kill in the Barrel, Y/N. There are people who would do anything in order to weaken me, and hurting you would be the simplest way. If you aren't prepared for what they're capable of doing, you're leaving yourself open."

You swallowed, placing the knife back onto the rack and picking up a gun instead. You ran your finger along the barrel, feeling its weight. "When did you kill for the first time?" you blurted out, and then gave him a careful look. Kaz didn't really like to talk about his past - you knew about Jordie and his nightmares of drowning, but it hadn't been easy for him to tell you.

He frowned at your question and brief moment of silence followed, but he then answered anyway. "Shortly after I joined the Dregs. I knew it's necessary if I wanted to climb along the ranks quickly." Kaz replied. "But you don't have to worry about killing someone right away. Just practice shooting and aim with Jesper. And learn how to use a knife with Inej."

You nodded in thought, putting the gun down. "I'd like to take one more match with the punching bag first though." Kaz raised his chin slightly, following you with his eyes with a tingle of pride shining there as you went back to the bag. "I want to kick its ass one final time before moving to guns and knives."
