SCARLETT

I SIGH AS I REMEMBER WHAT TODAY IS.

It's still early as I slowly open my eyes and take a look at my empty room. I roll onto my side only to be met by the cold.

All I want to do today is to stay in bed, binge-watch whatever show I can find on Netflix with chocolate, ice cream and wine. That's all I want until I feel a tug on the bed sheets.

Rose.

I sit up and see her trying to climb onto my bed. A small smile creeps onto my face as I watch her with her messy hair and her sleepy eyes, dressed in her favourite nightgown trying to get into bed with me. She managed to swing one of her legs over the mattress, now she's holding onto the sheets either trying to stop herself from falling off or to pull herself up. Though it fails as she starts to slip. However, I grab her under her armpit, and she squeals in surprise as I lift her into bed with me, before her butt could meet the cold ground. I set her down beside me and wait for her to decide where she wants to sit, but I'm not surprised when she chooses to lay down on my chest.

"Good morning Rosie." I say as I push some strand of hair behind her ear. She cuddles into me and closes her eyes...

Oh no she doesn't!

"Hey hey hey, not falling back asleep young lady. Come on wakey wakey it's almost 9am."

She groans when I slightly push her away from me. She makes grabby hands and puts on her best doe eyes trying to get back into the warmth. I peck her pout away and sit her down beside me. I wrap one of my arms around her shoulders and for a moment everything is perfect.

"Mama?" Rose's sweet voice pulls me away from my thoughts. I look down at her to meet her gorgeous eyes already looking up at me.

This kid holds the key to my heart.

"Yes honey?" She was about to speak when her stomach grumbled. "Oh. Let's go get breakfast." I extended my hand of Rose to grab before we made our way outside my bedroom. As my feet touched the cold ground, a shiver went up my spine and I wish I would've thought to wear slippers or something but Rose skipping away next to me makes me forget all about it.

"What should we have for breakfast then?"

"PANCAKES!" Rose screams as we enter the kitchen and I flinch slightly at the loud noise. It is way too early to deal with a screaming child. After Rose lets go of my hand, I rub my temples and sigh walking around my kitchen.

"Inside voice please, it's still early." I kiss her head as I walk past her to reach the cupboard.

"Can we make pancakes?" She asks again. God, now I feel bad. To put the both of us in a better mood, I turn on my phone and connect it to a speaker. I open Spotify and scroll down until I find Rose's playlist, which mainly consists of Disney songs.

My, what a guy, that Gaston! ... I literally can't get it out of my head.

"Of course we can! Now, come here and help me." I grab some bowls as well as the ingredients. Rose is having fun, cracking the eggs and measuring flour and one thing led to another, a small, flour-covered finger boops my nose. I gasp dramatically as Rose bursts into a fit of laughter. I prepare my revenge, dipping my finger into the flour bag, I turn around and Rose squeals and begins to run away. She runs around the kitchen island and I follow behind her. Laughter fills the room, and it continues on for a minute or two. I finally decide to catch her and wrap an arm around her waist before booping her nose.

"We look silly." Rose speaks as our laughter dies down.

"Yeah we do, don't we." We finish making the pancakes and decide on eating them at the coffee table, watching TV. Rose asked me for whipped cream and Nutella, I would usually say no but oh well, but today is technically a special day and might as well make the most of it. I swear, she had the biggest grin on her face when I said yes.
