SCARLETT"ARE YOU READY FOR HALLOWEEN?" I question my clearly overexcited daughter. She's been waiting for this day for weeks, and now she's just bouncing off the walls, high on excitement. She didn't even have any candy yet! How is she gonna be like when she'll be all filled up with sugar?!
"YEAH! I'm so excited!" She yells. I'd remind her of our rule, but there's no way she'll actually listen to me.
"Oh I couldn't tell!" I joke and laugh, but as predicted she doesn't hear me. "Lita and the kids should be there soon and then we'll go. Does that sound good?" I inform her. I hope this piece of information will calm her down a bit. However, I should've known it would only to excite her more.
Thank goodness it doesn't take them long to arrive. Ten minutes later, I hear the doorbell and Rose rushes over to open the door. She manages to do it and I want to tell her off, but she won't listen. Not tonight.
I catch a glimpse of Lita before Rose runs into her, wrapping her arms around her legs. I slowly make my way to join them, staying a little behind as I watch them interact. I'm glad Rose warmed up to Lita again. It has been a little tense since she found out about Lita and me, but now everything seems to be back to normal. We're still walking a bit on eggshells around my daughter, but I think we found a something that worked for everyone.
"Oh look at you princess Belle! Someone is living up to the name, you're very beautiful peanut." I hear Lita say.
Without a surprise, Rose is dressed up as Belle. I knew she wouldn't want t be anything else, it was a no-brainer really. She's been begging me for a princess dress for weeks and seeing the big smile on her face right now makes all the whining and tantrums she threw over this issue worth it.
I watch them from the threshold and wait for them to notice me. I don't want to interrupt whatever is going on. They're just too sweet. It takes them a while, especially Rose who's too busy to show Lita, and Hugo who's strapped to her chest, all the details of her costume, and my girlfriend is obviously entranced by it.
Lucas is the first one to make a move. He slowly lets go of her aunt's hand and walks over to me. He keeps his head down, still all shy and timid, but holds out his arms to me nevertheless. I don't hesitate to pull him in my arms, and he cuddles up to me happily.
Julie is next, gasping when she sees me and pushing past her aunt and my daughter to enter our home. She comes for a hug, but quickly pulls away to see my costume, which seems to intrigue her."Scarly! You're... what are you?"
"I'm Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's." I explain. I even do a little spin to let her see the whole fit with the black dress, chunky jewellery and big sunglasses. She doesn't seem impressed though.
"I don't know who that is." She tells me, reminding me that at the end of the day she's only 5. Of course she won't know who that is, I've seen her leave halfway through a movie to go play with something else because she's bored.
"And who do we have here?" I ask Julie, who's dressed as a famous superhero I know very well. Her dad probably showed her one of the movies, but the shield and bright red and blue colours give it all away. The only thing she's missing is the sort of head piece that he has, but she probably doesn't want to wear it yet.
"I'm Captain America! Do you like it?" She asks innocently, though her eyes are sparkling with excitement. She shows me the little details and all the accessories and when Lucas tries to get his hands on the shield, she lets him have it. Looks like I have my own little protector now.
"I love it!" We talk about her costume a bit more... until Lita and Rose decide to sneak up on us and scare the living shit out of the three of us. Julie retracted behind me with a scream, using me as a human shield.
