ALONE

CHAPTER 4

We arrived at their home. It was big, not as big as my parents' but it looked comfortable.

"Come on in now Josephine", uncle Dew called.

I followed them in like a puppy.

"This way", Maria said, walking ahead. I just wanted to sleep and maybe not wake but I knew I couldn't.

I walked in the same direction with her.

We stopped in front of a white door, she opened it and we came face to face with a big white room.

Its bed was wide enough for at least four people, it was well furnished with electronics along side.

"This would be your room, call if you need anything", Maria said and without waiting for a reply, she shut the door and I was left alone.

I looked around the room, for someone my age, the room was really big.

I walked around, touching things with admiration.

I settled in, arranging my things where I felt there were supposed to be. When I was done, I went into the washroom to clean up.

"I'm worried about your niece hon", Maria said to uncle Dew.

"It looks like she knows our every scheme and would strike us down when she gets a chance" she added.

"Babe don't worry about anything, she's only ten, she can not do anything", uncle Dew said.

"Just ten? You talk as if we haven't worked for this for twelve good years and now we have everything wrapped around our fingers, you want to take chances with that? I did not come this far to throw away twelve years of hard work to some ten years old kid Dew", she shouted.

"I'm calling doctor Rob", she added walking past him. 

"Doctor Rob? Why?" He asked.

"We made a plan Dew, we let her be if she has no clue of anything or implant the device if she acts too smart and she is acting too smart, I can't take any risks", she said.

"I have even forgotten about the device, God bless the day I met a smart beautiful woman like you, you can go ahead and call doctor Rob", he said, wrapping his hands around her waist and placing a peck on her cheek.

Maria giggled.

"I also called her family lawyer to ensure that he doesn't give the documents to anyone and also tell him the exact plan", she said, leaning further into her husband's hold.

He broke the hug and looked her in the eyes "I love you so much", he said and gave her a quick kiss on her lips.

I was done cleaning up, I changed into fresh clothes and walked out.

Before descending, I could hear Maria on the phone with someone, she was giving orders.

I tried to strain my ears to listen but I still couldn't hear clearly, I decided to go down.

She saw me and immediately ended the call.

"For how long have you been standing there?", she asked with her eyes shooting daggers at me.

I became scared. "I.. I.. I just came down now", I stammered. She walked back into the kitchen ignoring me.

I was hungry but got distracted by the doorbell.

I stalked towards the door to get it but Maria's voice came from the kitchen, "I'll get that", and I stopped in my track.

I stood at the exact same spot watching.

"Robins! It's so nice to see you again, come on in", she said as she hugged him.

"Darling your brother is here", she called for uncle Dew. 

'Brother? This is another uncle of mine? How? Dad never told me he had so many brothers', I was in deep thoughts when he approached me, bringing me back to reality.

"You must be Josephine, your dad never shuts up about you but too bad he's gone now" Rob said, without any trace of sympathy in his voice.

I held back the tears that formed in my eyes.

He brought me closer to him and hugged me so tight and the next thing I felt was pain in my neck.

My body couldn't carry itself anymore and I passed out in his embrace.
