"You nerds in position or what?" I heard Erica's voice through the radio
"Yeah, we're in position. It's all quiet here so you've got the green light" Robin confirmed
"Green light, copy that. Commence operation child endangerment" Erica announced
"Can we maybe not call it that?" Robin suggested
"See you on the other side. Nerds." Erica ignored Robins comment.
The air was thick with silence as we waited to hear again from Erica.
"All right, nerds. I'm there" Ericas voice cut through the silent night air
"Do you-- do you see anything?" Robin asked tentatively
"Yeah I see those boring boxes you're so excited about" Erica replied
"Any guards?" Robin asked
"Negative" Erica confirmed
"Booby traps?" Robin joked
"If I could see them, they'd be pretty shit traps, wouldn't they?" Erica pointed out
"Thankyou for that" Robin stated sarcastically
"I'm in" Erica shouted triumphantly
"Oh god" Steve breathed a sigh of combined relief and panic
"Free ice cream. For. Life" Erica shouted as she strutted through the doors of the room.
Holy shit. She actually did it.
We all hopped up from our positions and ran down to greet Erica.
"We actually did it!" Dustin shouted gleefully as he ran to Erica
"Ummm excuse me, I did it don't take credit for my labour" Erica corrected
"Whatever. I wanna see what's inside those boxes" I said cheerfully running into the storage room.
We quickly located the boxes and Steve began to tear open a box for 'the imperial panda'.
Inside there was a strange metal box that appeared to have a locking handle mechanism on top. Whatever was in there was definitely special, or dangerous, or both.
Steve cautiously twisted and lifted the lid of the box as mist poured out revealing 4 smaller twist and lock handles.
"That's definitely not Chinese food" Steve remarked as we all peered into the box
"Uh, maybe you guys should, you know, stand back." Steve suggested
"No" Dustin shook his head
"Dustin don't be stupid" I pleaded
"Just step back okay?" Steve ushered Dustin away from the box as me, Erica, and Robin watched from a few steps behind.
"Step back seriously" Steve reiterated as dustin continued to push back
"No! If you die, I die" Dustin announced dramatically
Steve stared at him blankly before simply saying "Okay" as he twisted open one of the mysterious handles.
"You're so dramatic" I whispered to dustin rolling my eyes
He pulled it out to reveal a container of fluorescent green goo, it looked like something out of ghostbusters
"What the hell?" Steve uttered
"What is that?" Robin asked
Suddenly, the room began to shake a little producing a low rumbling sound.
Was there an earthquake or something?
"Was that just me, or did the room move?" Dustin asked
"I felt it too" I turned to dustin
"Booby traps" Erica whispered dramatically
The room shook again, this time more violently causing a reaction out of Robin.
"You know what? Let's just grab that and go" Robin snatched the container from Steve as dustin furiously pressed the 'open door' button with surprisingly little affect.
"Which one do I press Erica?" Dustin asked panicked
"Just press the damn button nerd" Erica snapped as Robin zipped the mysterious package into her backpack
"Which one? I'm pressing the button!" Dustin shouted
"Just press open door!" Erica and dustin bickered
Erica dustin and Steve shouted over eachother as me and Robin tried to settle them.
"Steve the button isn't going to work just because you're the one who's pressing it" I pointed out calmly
"Yes THANKYOU Henderson! You're being Very helpful right now!" He shouted back impatiently
All of a sudden, a shutter fell down over the door and the group fell silent for a moment before the room began to violently shake, the lights flickering, causing everyone to erupt into screams.
The room was falling and falling fast, the sounds of Erica's screams filling our ears as me and Robin stumbled against the wall.
"We're going down! We're going down!" Steve shouted
"Really Steve?" I screamed
"Yeah no shit harrington!" Robin joined in
Our hands inched closer together as we gripped onto the shelves for support, our fingers brushing against eachother.
Dustin and Erica surrounded the key pad pushing any button they could find to try and prevent our impending doom, screaming at one another so much I could barely make out what they were saying.
Our terrifying drop ended abruptly as we crashed to the ground, all of us tumbling straight to the floor.
I jolted forwards and landed onto my back knocking my head on the hard floor. It wasn't long until I was hit with something else though. I slowly opened my eyes to see Robin inches above my face having fallen and landed on to me, her eyes wide in embarrassment.
We lay there looking at eachother for a moment, unsure of what to do next as we awkwardly lay on top of eachother.
Fuck.
This was the worst possible time for this situation and I was becoming increasingly aware of the eyes of Steve, dustin and Erica on us. But even so, I had to notice how comfortably the curves of her body seemed to fit mine.
"Uh... I'm so so sorry" Robin hastily babbled awkwardly standing up.
She offered her hand with an apologetic smile to which I accepted with a very sincere if not slightly surprised smile.
I may never recover.
