Chapter 22
When I'm Gone
First Person~ Kate
"What did Rick say?" Glenn asked Lori as he hurrying over to her by the fire pit. I don't think he noticed me. She gave him a look. "You didn't tell him?" She didn't respond. "Okay. But you have to." Glenn urged. "You're pregnant." At this she stiffened and quickly glanced around, hoping nobody aside from me had been within range of his whispers. Glenn glanced around to, blanching when he saw me curled up in a lawn chair around my sketchbook. "Oh Jesu-"
"It's okay Glenn, she already knows." Lori said quickly. I nodded agreement.
"Oh, okay." He breathed a sigh of relief. I could only imagine if I accidentally let it slip, especially if it got back around to Rick before she told him herself. "Wait, you told Kate but not Rick?!" Lori ignored this and so did I, so after Glenn got no response he gave up that point and moved on. "You need vitamins, medicine, a nice pillow." He continued my daily rant, setting down the basket of peaches he was holding to take his meat from it. "You can have my share." He held some jerky out to her but she didn't take it.
"Honey, I don't want your food, okay? Eat." Lori told him the same thing she'd said when I tried to share my breakfast.
"You need to eat. You're too skinny." Glenn insisted. And if you're not gonna let Rick take care of you, then someone has to." At this Lori and I shared a look. He sounded just like me.
"Lori, you have a medical condition. I'll make another run into town. Just tell me what you need."
"I need you to be quiet about this." She said. "Alright? Please."
"Hey! Peach man." Shane whistled and called from the Cherokee.
Glenn sighed and nodded before picking up the basket of peaches and heading over to the men. I got up and started to follow. It looked like they were working out more grid plans.
Lori grabbed my hand, stopping me. "You have no idea how thankful I am I don't have to beg you to keep quiet too." She said gratefully. I just nodded and she gave my hand a squeeze before releasing it and turning back to the fire. I ran a hand through my hair, unable to keep my eyes off Rick as I joined them.
"What are you thinking?" I asked, forcing my eyes down on the map as I joined the little group, consisting of just Shane, Rick and Jimmy.
"Well the creek flows..."
"South." I offered.
"Right. Past that farmhouse you and Daryl found. Maybe Sophia dropped the doll there, the current brought it downstream." Rick explained his theory, charting it out on the map with his finger as he went.
"So what, you think she took this road here and then she went north?" Shane asked.
"Yeah. What's up that way?" Rick looked to Jimmy.
"A housing development. It went in maybe 10 years ago." He said.
"Take a run up there after gun practice." Shane offered.
"I'll hold down the fort here, but take backup. After what went down with Daryl, I don't want anyone going out alone. We stay in pairs." Rick ordered. Shane looked to me but I shook my head.
"I'm not going to practice, so I figure I'll comb the woods a little more, maybe cover the area around road between the house and the development in case she's still on her way there or somethin.'" I said. There was no point in taking a lesson in something you already knew how to do, especially when we didn't have bullets to spare in the first place. Plus no way did I want to get stuck all alone with Shane for the afternoon, I was still steaming about what he said in the stables yesterday.
