Chapter 57 Part 2 - Rage and Grace
Third Person ~
Kate stood at the open gate surveying the empty yard. Smoke and gun haze still hung in the air, the only remnants of the Woodbury army still there aside from the vehicles they'd abandoned. There was a minor sting in her hands where the repeated kickback of her high power assault rifle had torn open the blisters on her hands but she didn't mind in the slightest, barely noticing it actually. Still charged from the fight, her blood pounded through her veins, a humming mixture of fading adrenaline and satisfaction. They'd kicked the Governor's ass without a single casualty, sending his pathetic excuse for an army running for the hills.
"We did it. We drove them out." Rick said, also scanning the yard.
"We should go after them." Michonne said immediately.
"We should finish it." Daryl agreed. The Governor hadn't died and neither had Justin, the two people for whose blood he was really thirsty.
"It is finished. Didn't you see them hightail it out of here?" Maggie asked, disbelieving that they wanted to go chase them down and fight some more after they'd been lucky enough to all survive that round. The people of Woodbury hadn't been so lucky and she had a hard time imagining they'd be coming back any time soon.
"They could regroup." Glenn pointed out.
"We can't take the chance. He's not gonna stop." Kate sided with Michonne. They needed to end this, once and for all. The Governor was going to die.
"They're right. We can't keep living like this." Carol agreed.
"So we take the fight back to Woodbury? We barely made it back last time." Maggie argued, looking at the faces surrounding her. No one agreed with her.
"I don't care." Daryl shot down the point she was trying to make, sounding more reckless than logical. Kate looked at him but he didn't meet her eyes before the sound on a car speeding back down the road grabbed everyone's attention, knotting their stomachs. They couldn't have regrouped that quickly, could they have? Kate shared a glance with Rick before they're own green Hyundai tore around in the corner and into sight. They were driving like the devil was chasing them which didn't allow anyone relief. They blew through the open gates and everyone hurried to the side as the Hyundai didn't slow near them but continued closer to the doors. No one said anything, not having to since they were all wondering the same things that no one had the answers to and ran after it. The SUV's engine cut and the back door flew open, Beth spilling out first with a crying Judith in her arms. Her panicked face and bloody hands made Kate's blood run cold. Elsie. Carl. Hershel. It could be any of theirs.
"Beth?" Maggie squawked, temporarily freezing in horror.
"What happened?" Rick demanded as they all crowded forward to try and see who the bleeder was and how serious it was.
"Back up!" Hershel ordered, having got himself and his crutches out of the car and was now hobbling around to them.
"Who's hurt?" Kate panicked but got no answer, Hershel was in business mode.
"Back up! Someone get the truck, we need medical supplies now!" He barked, parting the crowd of freaked out people like Moses and the red sea.
"Help," Carl grunted from inside the car.
"Carl?" Rick cried, jumping in front of Hershel to the open door to find his bloody son uninjured. He could hardly be relieved though because Elsie was slumped limply, her face ghostly pale and her front soaked in blood. Carl was struggling in an attempt to awkwardly shift his now unconscious friend toward the door.
