Chapter Six

Camp Sunshine

Frist Person ~ Kate

The next day Lori and I wandered around the woods collecting armfuls of firewood. Since Daryl and I weren't hunting until the deer was almost gone, which would be tomorrow, I often found I had idle hands. I'd given up on helping fishing after realizing that was Amy and Andrea's 'thing,' not wanting to impose. The firewood pile had really gotten to a healthy size in the past couple days.

"You seem happier lately." I told Lori, glad for her. Her husband's death had really been causing her a lot of grief which she didn't know how to deal with.

"I am." She agreed, a covert smile playing on her lips.

"It's Shane isn't it?" I guessed causing the smile to disappear and her to drop a couple pieces of wood which she quickly stooped to pick up.

"How'd you know?" She asked, uncomfortably tucking her hair behind her ear. "Call it a hunch."

        "Do the others know?"

"Not that I know of." She pondered this a moment, I had clearly stressed her way out. "Look, I get why you might want to keep quiet about it, at least for the beginning, for Carl and all. I won't say anything." She nodded, looking relieved but still guilt ridden.

"I just- he's gone. My husband's gone and so is everything I ever knew except Shane and Carl. He's- he's my rock, you know? And Carl just adores him and who knows how long we've got..." She desperately tried to explain herself to me. I placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. I wasn't here to judge. She was going through a lot and how ever she managed to cope was her business.

"It's okay. I get it. You're not a bad person for it. If you guys make each other happy, which you do, then I'm the last person that's gonna stand in your way."

She smiled meekly. 'Thanks Kate. You know, I think you're just about my only friend in this camp." She half laughed. "Good thing you're a good one."

"Kate!" A teary Elsie wailed as soon as she saw Lori and I come out of the woods, running over to wrap herself around my waist. I awkwardly shifted the wood, trying not to drop any on her, and bent down to get on eye level.

"What is it?" I asked urgently. Walker attacks popping into my mind.

"It's Glenn! He got beat up!" She informed me, clearly distraught over the matter.

"Oh my God, who would beat up Glenn?" Lori exclaimed, covering her mouth.

"What?! By who? Where is he?" I fired questions at her.

"His tent." She pointed to the blue tent next to our own.

"Okay, I'm gonna go talk to him." I said, giving her hand a squeeze before standing and practically running to his tent. I dropped the wood outside and unzipped it, barging in. He was lying on his sleeping bag holding a wet cloth to his eye. He sat up when I entered.

"Hey Kate, thanks for knocking." He muttered, blushing faintly as he pushed a pair of pants and underwear to the side. I ignored this, kneeling next to him and pulling the cloth away. Under it was a black eye swollen shut.

"Jesus Glenn, what happened?" I demanded, he winced and yanked away when I gently poked at it.

"Ow! Err... I fell into the table corner..." He lamely tried to come up with something.
