Vinnie's POV

And she closed her eyes slowly.
And her body went limp.
And her lips parted.
And the grasp of her hand around my
arm relaxed.
And her growing chest at every breath
stayed flat.
And the fumes resting on her skin
turned it grey.
And that one very last tear that had
threatened to fall this entire time.
Fell, down on her skin.
Tracing down the dust revealing her
rosy cheek.
And with all the force I had left.
I picked her up.
I ripped apart the bounds.
I held her tightly close to my chest.
I forced my eyes open through the
smoke.
I didn't let myself cough.
I didn't let her go once.
I threw the goddamn door open.
I took a few steps.
I let myself stare at the golden flames
burning before me.
I pushed myself through the flames.

Covering her small figure with mine.
Shielding her from the toxic air.
Helping her through the unbearable
heat.
The ceiling collapsing down in front of
me blocked the exit.
My last hope for life.
Little sparks flew and hit my face.
Making me hiss at its touch.
I kicked and punched.
Out of my way, the pieces of the
building keeping us trapped.
I slipped her body through the escape.
A man took grip of her and carried her
away.
It's the last I'd seen.
« only one of us could make it »
« Happy birthday »
