"So what do you wanna do?" she asked.

He pursed his lips, drinking in the sound of cicadas as they lounged in the shadow of the corner grocery store. They'd had the whole afternoon ahead of them mere hours before. Where had all that time gone?

"I dunno, what do you wanna do?" he replied.

She rolled her eyes, watching another car rumble by. The sun continued its relentless march towards the horizon, but the two of them still hadn't figured out how they'd spend their precious time away from school and home.

"Maybe we should go somewhere else?" she asked.

He looked up at the summer sky, watching wispy clouds roll past as blue turned to orange. They could head off and find something to do, but...

"Nah. I'm fine being here as long as I'm with you."

She leaned back with a smile, and the afternoon gave way to evening with nothing to show for it. But it was still time well spent.
