Working with stones and crystals is very popular in witchcraft and new age practices. Most likely because, as well as being powerful vessels of the earth's energy, they are very accessible and portable; anyone can pick up a pebble and keep it in their pocket.

Stones and crystals are powerful because they have spent millennia absorbing the earth's energy, and are particularly good at radiating that energy in the form of vibrations. In fact, crystals are so good at vibrating that they are used as the driving force in keeping clocks accurate. If you're reading this on a PC, there is a vibrating quartz crystal in the clock of your CPU right now. So you can begin to see why stones & crystals are considered to be so powerful by witches and other occult practitioners.
Rocks and pebbles store great amounts of spiritual energy, but crystals have the added bonus of colour energy, as well as their crystalline structures allowing them radiate magickal energy more efficiently. Crystals come in all shapes, sizes, and colours, so their applications in witchcraft are practically endless.
Where to get stones & crystals
🌲 Find them in nature: Getting rocks, stones, and pebbles is very easy, not to mention free. Take a walk outside and pick up any rocks that gain your attention. Take some moments to feel the power held within the rock, and if it feels like it will serve your craft well, then keep it and take it home with you.
You can work with any rocks that you bond with well, but you may want to look in particular for rocks that contain small quartz crystal fragments (e.g. diorite & granite), and hag stones (stones that have holes through them).

💰 Buy them cheaply: Gems and crystals are also relatively easy to obtain. They are commonly for sale in the gift shops of museums and heritage sites, and you can pick them up cheaply in New Age stores. I find crystal magick to be ideal for closet witches because most Christians don't consider them to be "witchy" or "evil" - my favourite crystal shop is inside a church!
When you find somewhere to buy crystals, choose your specimen with the same method as choosing a rock. Pick up any crystal that draws your attention, then take some moments to examine it and feel its magickal energy. If the bond feels strong, buy it and keep it.
