Aileen’s POV
I hugged Tommy tightly ever since Esmé shoved him towards the other side of the road. I could see Esmé sprawled there on the ground, her hair surrounding her gorgeous tanned face. I’m immobilized with shock, the scene, Esmé, and the car that had crashed into a nearby telephone pole. I didn’t know what to do. Esmé’s the responsible one, she’s the one who knows what to do in these situations. I repeated to myself.
“Tommy, you stay here while I go get Esmé.”
“Okay …Aileen?” his innocent voice filled with terror.
“Yes?”
“I’m scared.” his voice wavering.
“I know, it’s all going to be okay.” I promised, a promise I wouldn’t be able to keep. I ran out into the street and carefully carried Esmé onto the sidewalk only realizing how stupid I was to not to check for cars after what had just happen.
“Stay here with Esmé while I go and check on the other car, ‘kay?” I said to Tommy.
“Okay”
When I got to the car I peered in through the shattered window. The man appeared to have a major head wound, his face drenched in blood.
Okay, first aid. I thought to myself. What the heck am I thinking? I don’t know any damn first aid! Esmé does but she’s unconscious...or dead...No! don’t think like that. I forced the thought to the back of my mind.I looked at the man again and this time noticed the unmistakable face of... Mr.Valdez?
Mr. Valdez, Esmé’s dad, the words ricocheted off the inside of my skull, to shocked to even whisper them I started to panick. What do I do now? I stared at Tommy as if somehow he would know the answer. Call 911, obviously! What am I, stupid?
I fumbled with my cell phone as I slipped it out of my pocket, clutching onto it with my sweaty hands, I dialled the number. After taking too many tries just to dial the simple number, I finally succeeded. The phone rang, I waited anxiously for someone to pick up.
“Hello, what’s your emergency?” said a female monotone voice.
“Uhh...There’s been a car crash,” Pause, “Two people are injured,” my voice was shaking horribly. I looked over at a confused Tommy as he stood waiting for Esmé to stand up as if everything was okay. Then I started thinking She was my best friend, the memories we shared would become only mine, no one to laugh until I cried with, no more inside jokes. No one who could ever understand me better than she did. She may have been simple but I loved her for it. She was, she is, a part of me that I can’t lose. I’m not going to lose her, I can’t, I won’t!” I sincerely hoped that Tommy couldn’t somehow hear my terrible notions, he’s frightened enough as it is.
“Are you still there?” The lady at the other end’s voice brought me out of my reverie. “Would you like an ambulance? ”
“Uh...yes?”
“Alright, where are you and what’s your name?”
“Um...the corner of Park street, Kate Aileen Jackson, but I go by Aileen.”
“Okay Aileen. we’ll be right there.”
“Okay, I need to make another call”
“Okay, you do that, we’ll be right there.”
“Okay,” but she had already hung up. That was the first person I told my first name to except for Esmé, and of course my parents already knew. At that thought I broke down and sobs racked through my body.
