Walking side by side with Kaz through the dark and dirty streets of Ketterdam felt so familiar yet so unfamiliar to her. An act that had once been taken for granted caused such conflict upon the girl. Flashes of memory ran through her mind and she frowned, looking at the ground as the silence choked her, she was silently begging Kaz to break it, say anything, insult her, make a dig at her past, anything to shut her mind up.
All those years ago they'd laughed and nudged each other as they walked through these streets, weaving in and out of the crowd. Nothing to worry about other than their family calling for them to come back for dinner. It had been second nature to them, joint hands and matching smiles. So hopefully oblivious to the horrors that they would later face in their miserable lives, without one another to hold each other through it.
Oh how she wanted to go back to that day when they'd stolen a cake from a passing couple, snickering at their achievement, only to run into Jordie who scolded them and made them apologise, returning the cake to the rightful owner. The couple had merely laughed at the duo, allowing them to have the cake, telling them they'd just buy another. Jordie had shaken his head at the two but the amusement that shone in his eyes told a different story.
A part of Raina wanted to ask about Jordie, she knew he had died, but how? It wasn't her place to ask, especially not now but the question was eating away at her. Was this why Kaz had become dirtyhands, burying any reminder to who he used to be, that boy was gone? There was no denying it, the boy she used to know was long dead and in his place a cruel monster. The same could be said for Raina, a bright and innocent girl who had been pushed to the wrong side in a chase of vengeance.
