Hayes's POV
"I got here as fast as I could." Brendan said, as he walked inside. It was the day after Madi called me, and I was determined to get her back.
"I screwed up, man. She's gone. Again." I hated that I had to say that she left again. It's like I can never keep her.
"Madi knows she left, right?" Brendan said, and I nodded.
"Well, that means she's there, Hayes. We should go there now." He suggested, and I ran out of the door.
Brendan was calling for me from behind, but soon he caught up to me. We reached Madi's house in a matter of minutes. We knocked on her door furiously, until she answered it with an annoyed look on her face.
"What?" She said.
"Well? Where's Juliet?" Brendan asked.
"Not. Here." Madi said as she began to shut the door. We held it open.
"Come on, Madi. This is serious." I said.
"She's not here. I told you that already." She huffed.
"Do you know where she went?" I asked, and she groaned.
"Look, all I know is that you-" she pointed at me, "were drunk last night and you blamed Aaron's death on her. You called her a bitch and then she left you because you told her to. If you didn't told her to, she would've stayed."
"Then what happened?"
"She came to my house. Her bags were packed and she cried and cried until she couldn't anymore. She left this morning." She said, and I swear that all the weight that was pushed on me due to gravity doubled, making it harder to breathe.
"I was drunk...? I made her cry..." I repeated, thoughtlessly.
I would never make her cry, or tell her to leave. I never even touched a bottle of alcohol, let alone get drunk.
"You're lying." I said.
"Hayes." Brendan said. "Didn't your mom ground you and you had a headache yesterday?"
"Shit, yeah." I groaned.
"Yeah, and I'm lying." Madi sneered. "Let me know when you find her." She said as she closed the door on our face. This time, we let her.
"You got drunk?" Brendan said. "Without me?"
"You're okay with that?" I asked.
"I'm not okay that you told Juliet to leave. That's awful." He said, and I nodded.
"I know. If I ever try to drink again, please slap me." I said, making him laugh.
We were walking aimlessly now. We didn't have a plan on where to go because Madi was our only hope.
We walked to the park that was close to her house, and sat on the swing sets.
"I give up." I sighed.
"Nope. Not letting that happen." Brendan said. "Is there anywhere else?"
"She must've...no..." I said.
"Okay. This isn't giving up, I promise. We're just taking a break." Brendan said, and I let out a small laugh.
"There we go. Come on, we're going to Starbucks." He said.
"God, you sound like a white girl." I commented. It was his turn to laugh.
"Fair enough, but when you try the Caramel Frappé, you'll thank me."
"Please stop talking."
///
The Starbucks was crowded, which it never was. There were people studying, listening to music, or they were just talking.
Brendan and I were waiting in line, waiting for our drinks to get done (yes, he convinced me to get a Caramel Frappé. No, I will not enjoy it) and we were just overhearing people's conversations.
"That girl at the corner has been here since we opened." A worker from behind the counter said, talking to another worker.
"Yeah. Should we kick her out?" The other worker asked.
"No, maybe she'll buy something else, instead of listening to music or crying silently." The first one answered.
I stared at Brendan, and he looked at me at the same time. We turned to the girl in the corner, and there was Juliet. She was listening to music, staring outside of the big window.
I walked over to her slowly, and she looked up at me. Her eyes were red and puffy, like she was crying.
"I waited for you." She gave me a lop-sided smile. "But you never came."
