adam ate silently.

his face was decorated in a variety of hello kitty patterned bandages.

"what's wrong with your face?" older adam asked, staring at the bandages.

"what's wrong with your face?" adam replied.

older adam scoffed.

they continued to eat. their movements were almost exactly the same.

i tapped my fingers along the edge of the counter, acrylics clicking.

"so, you came back for your wife, laura?" adam asked.

"we're not getting into that." older adam shrugged it off.

"hey, she's my wife too!" adam said.

i glared at him.

"no she's not!" adam corrected himself.

"you know what? we should get into that." older adam turned.

"thank you."

"met in the academy. she was twenty minutes late to the wrong classroom, in the wrong building. i offered to walk her to the right one, and- man, i was all in before we even made it outside. a couple of years ago, she didn't come back from a jump. they told me her jet broke up on re-entry, but she was the best pilot in the program. she wrote the book on re-entry. didn't make sense."
