"COLONEL PHILLIPS," SAID STEVE, storming into the tent, Bex by his side. He let go of her hand as they marched in.
"Well, if it isn't the Star-Spangled Man With a Plan," said the Colonel, sitting at a desk with a pen in his hand. He seemed to be writing letters. People bustled in the tent and outside it around them, helping injured men outside or taking care of them inside. Some wrote things into folders. Everyone seemed to be contributing. Properly. "And one of his many dancing girls. What's your plan today?" he said. His voice sounded annoyed.
"I need the casualty list from Azzano," said Steve.
"You don't get to give me orders, son," said the Colonel.
"We just need one name," said Steve.
"Sergeant James Barnes," said Rebecca, stepping forward. Peggy stayed just beside them.
"From the 107th," completed Steve.
Colonel Phillips pointed to Agent Carter with the pen he was holding. "You and I are gonna have a conversation later that you won't enjoy," he said to her.
"Please tell me if he's alive sir. B-A-R—" Steve was cut off.
"I can spell," interrupted the Colonel. He sat for a moment, then got up, holding the papers he had been writing on. He turned around to face the table behind him and began to speak.
"I have signed more of these condolence letters today than I could care to count," he said solemnly. "But," he turned around, "the name does sound familiar."
Steve's face of hope melted away. Rebecca looked down sadly.
"I'm sorry," said Phillips.
"What about the others?" said Steve, eyebrows raising again. "Are you planning a rescue mission?"
"Yeah, it's called 'winning the war,'" said the Colonel snarkily.
Steve turned to look Phillips in the eyes again. "But if you know where they are, why not at least..."
"They're 30 miles behind the lines through some of the most heavily fortified territory in Europe," said Colonel Phillips, turning to look at the map pinned on the wall behind him. "We'd lose more men than we'd save. But I don't expect you two to understand that, because you're chorus girls."
Steve's facial expression barely changed— but Rebecca saw the little twitch in his eyebrows. He seemed almost angry.
"I think I understand just fine," said Steve.
"Well then understand it somewhere else," said Phillips. He walked forward to go around them. "If I read the posters correctly, you got someplace to be in 30 minutes," he said, walking away.
