Sandcastle Love

We lie by the waters of the beach
In the setting sun, the orangeness touches our cheek.
As the waves gently crash, we greet them with our feet.
I held your hands whilst I was trembling in fear our love would get buried in the sand.

My hugs were tighter than usual.
I did not want to hear the words of farewells
The fire we lit made us warm but you got burned
When I got too close, I knew it was my turn.

You looked at me straight into my eyes.
It impaled right through my soul's disguise.
I broke into tears, it flowed like one of your lullabies.
Love, I know what's to come are your goodbyes.

I looked back at yours but I couldn't see the reflection of the sun.
I knew that you loved me but where has it gone?
And you said your love was a handful of sand,
Eventually you were left with none.

Then the warmth I felt in my hand softly disappeared.
I wanted to reach yours but I couldn't dare.
I was dumbfounded and was left with nothing to say
But to mumble "I love you anyway, in any way" as you went on your way and I was left here all alone to stay.
