"Kayla..Kayla wake up"
Jumping awake Kayla glanced around taking in her surroundings. She was in the hospital wait room. With Jeremy. She wondered how long they'd been there but her throat hurt too much to speak
"The nurse said the doctor will speak with us soon"
Kayla sat silently looking at the boy who was crouched in front of her on the floor holding her hands as she bounced her leg subconsciously in attempt to ease her nerves about her dad
When the girl didn't respond Jeremy tilted his head, his thumb brushing the backs of her hand. Scanning her face, he gazed into her eyes, he thought she might've been staring through him and so he spoke again
"You need anything? Water? I can call Caroline or Liz?"
Still staring unblinkingly, Kayla once again didn't respond. Jeremy went to stand when her phone rang
Snapping her out of her trance she pulled the phone out of her pocket to look at the caller ID

Kayla's eyes snapped up to Jeremy who stared at the phone before taking it out of her hand and turning it off
"He probably knows-"
"Doesn't matter, he can't hurt you. Not with all of these people here. No matter what he is" Jeremy reassured the girl but for some reason, she wasn't worried about Stefan hurting her or even Damon despite what he'd done to Zach
No, some part of her was trying to make logical since of the illogical. If Stefan and Damon wanted to hurt her, they've had plenty of opportunities to do so
The girl was definitely still afraid of the brothers but not to the same extent as before. Now, she was just worried about Zach but her mind was a lot calmer. Not as noisy. Just thoughts of her father
"If he comes...do you think Damon wil-"
"No-"
"You gone stop interrupting me"
Jeremy slowly starts to smile at the girl as she glared at him before questioning his smile
"Why are you smiling weirdo?"
"Just you"
Rolling her eyes, Kayla leaned back in her seat crossing her arms when the Doctor came around the corner causing her to stand abruptly
"Family of Zach Salvatore?"
"Me! Is he okay? Will he be okay? Can I see him?"
"He's stable...you managed to get him in here with just enough time for us to do a transfusion"
Kayla sighed in relief as tears swelled up in her eyes, she turnt to Jeremy with a smile before the doctor spoke again
"However-"
"However?"
"He seemed to have some sort of force of something sharp to the head forcing us to do surgery. The only way to save him was to induce a coma so the healing process can begin..otherwise he may have went under permanently"
"So he's...in a coma? For-for how long?"
"We don't know for sure. Could be days, weeks or as long as years. It depends...but I do want to warn you. This entire stage of healing is up to him. He could very well never wake up but for now- things are looking great. Your able to visit now, he's in room 207. Please let us know if we can help with anything"
Jeremy nodded in thanks as the Doctor walked away. Kayla stood silently before mumbling "A coma? A fucking coma? What the hell? He was supposed to be okay Jeremy. He was-"
"Zach is okay. He's just trying to heal"
The Gilbert boy pulled the girl into a hug. As Kayla laid her cheek on his chest she closes her eyes for a second wanting to clear her mind and relax for a second before she heard her name
"Kayla"
Opening her eyes the girl saw Stefan. Pulling away from Jeremy she backed up, pulling the boy with her
"Kayla listen, there's a lot you don't understand"
"No duh. You and Damon aren't human"
"I can explain all of this to you. I promise. I just need you to trust me" Stefan pleaded
"Trust you?" Kayla tilted her head "You've done nothing but lie to me the entire time I've known you"
"For you safety"
"MY safety?"
"Yes!"
"THIS was all for MY safety? How? How is being in the dark ever safer?"
Sighing Stefan started "I know you don't want to listen to me but I promise things will make more sense. Jeremy can come to-"
"Oh I was always coming" The youngest Gilbert interrupted before turning to Kayla
"He thought I wasn't coming?"
Rolling her eyes Kayla spoke "Listen-You can talk later. Im going to go see my dad. You can both wait out here. But don't get too close to him or I will mace you"
Turning around the girl walked away as Stefan's hardened expression melted and he thought
'She called him dad'
