Everything is digital nowadays. We read on a screen, we write on a screen, we publish on a screen. Much of our personality is now integrated into pixels and posts and pictures. This wasn't always the way. In fact, this is a new phenomenon entirely for writers.

I, for one, believe paper still has so much value to our specific artistic discipline. There's something about the permanence of paper that makes me take my writing seriously. The words can't be so easily altered, and the paragraphs just seem to measure up differently. There's visual weight in the black ink and the tactile nature of paper makes it feel, in some way, more significant.

Now, this could be a remnant of a different age that is lost on some of you. I've never turned in a homework assignment digitally, which I'm sure isn't the case for the majority of Wattpad users. When that paper was passed down the line and I saw that grade, it was scrawled in red ink. And that sort of visceral action my teachers once used has settled on me in a substantial way, carrying over to my writing process. In particular, the editing phase.

I find it fulfilling to edit on paper, red pen in hand. The juxtopisition of the organic red marks against lines of black on a white backdrop grab ahold of me. And once I've gotten through a short stack, it's time to input my edits onto the digital document. Mostly so I can remember what I had just edited... since my handwriting is shit...

The issue is how to view your pages easily when inputting your edits into the computer. You took all that time, you need to have them in front of you and in a way that won't strain your neck. The 90's were full of a bunch of really awkward solutions to this problem.

Clunky plastic stands that overwhelm your desk, Terminator-looking armatures that clipped onto your screen. All of them were too much. There was an elegant and inexpensive solution on the way. And here, in this glorious stage in the process, is where I often use one of my oldest and trustiest(?) Favorite Things! My PAGE-UP DOCUMENT HOLDER.

I've had a couple of these in my collection for as long as I can remember. Without taking up much space in my bag, or on the table beside my laptop, I can easily switch into editing mode. In seconds, a handful of pages slip right into the weighted document holder. It mimics the way you position your thumb when holding paper with one hand, curving the pages in such a way that they stand upright on the tabletop. It's almost as if a third hand is holding up the pages for you.

I started with a basic off-white Page-Up, but now they come in all sorts of colors. And translucent (!!), so you can see the white sand inside (((really, really, try not to drop it... the sand is a bitch to clean up). The best part is that the Page-Up is cheeeeeeap. They run about ten bucks on Amazon. There's no reason not to have one. Or three, like me. It's an essential part of my collection of author-y stuff.
