Beep. Beep. Beep.

I slowly pushed through the fog that threatened to keep me under and took a deep breath. There was a mask covering half my face with a tube that was pressing oxygen in and out of my lungs. Everything was still black and I couldn't move.

"Erin?" I heard multiple muffled voices murmur my name.

I couldn't respond. The beeping got louder and faster until I slipped back into the fog.

When I woke up again the tube down my throat was gone and cold oxygen rushed into my nose. I breathed it in deeply and finally opened my eyes.

I was met with bright white and then slowly things started to take shape. I was in a hospital room. There were IV bags beside me. One dropped a clear liquid and the other dripped blood, drip, drip, drip, into the backs of my hands.

I heard a stifled gasp and stiffly turned toward the sound. My mom was uncurling herself from the chair to my side. She began to cry. "Oh! Erin!" she exclaimed through the tears hugging me gently. "Oh my baby!"

"Momma?" I croaked.

My dad suddenly appeared at my side. "Oh, Erin." he said stroking my hair and kissing my forehead. He began to cry too.

I was confused. Why were they crying? What happened?

"Honey?" my mom said gently. I squinted in her direction. "Do you remember anything?"

"No." I said in the whisper that was my voice. "What happened?"

My mom wiped at her cheeks and took my dad's hand. "Let's not worry about that right now. Okay? We need to focus on you getting better. Yes?"

"Okay." I said slowly.

"Get some rest, baby. You need it to heal." my dad whispered kissing my forehead again.

My eyelids grew heavy and I slipped back into a drugged daze.
