Wakatsuki Takeshi x Reader

pt. 2 of Maroon

--

Wakatsuki wasn't looking for a relationship.

You weren't looking for one, either.

Hatsumi Sen had done irreparable damage to your mind, body, and soul. For so long, all you had known in love was him. There were flings between your fifteen or so years of off-and-on relationships, but you could never love them, your head still stuck in Sen's idyllic cloud.

You had to pull yourself out of the gutter that Sen left you in. You banished your prized merlot from your cabinets so you couldn't escape from reality anymore. Your new apartment wouldn't see a drop of red anywhere. You feared that Hatsumi would crawl his way back in if you left anything how it was before.

It was a year after you had left him, almost to the day, when you met Wakatsuki.

You were eating dinner with a friend in a quiet restaurant when you saw him.

His large form sat painfully upright at the bar as he clenched a comically small beer bottle in one of his large hands. His blonde hair was messy and his shirt was loose at the collar, but you couldn't help but stare over your friend's shoulder at him.

"What are you looking at?" Your friend dramatically turned their head and craned their neck around in search of what you could be staring at. "Nothing! Now stop being so obvious."

Their head swiveled back around with a smirk before their eyes landed on the only man on that side of the restaurant who happened to catch your attention.

"You should go for it!" They tried to quietly yell, only for it to come out louder than their regular voice. You shushed and playfully hit them, hoping the man hadn't heard. "You think?"

"Yes! You've been victim to Hatsumi Sen for long enough, now it's time to show him who's the boss of your life."

"Do my tits look good?"

"Always. Now go get him, tiger." Your friend sent you off with a shove and a wink, and soon you found yourself stumbling toward the mountain of a man at the bar.

"Is this seat taken?" Your polite voice made him jump, your small laugh making his eyes blow wide after. "Uh- no. Feel free."

"Thanks." You gave him your name, and he had to stop himself from giving you his heart.

That was the start of the best thing that had ever happened to you.

Wakatsuki was a surprisingly timid man, the opposite of your usual type.

He was hesitant and apologetic when he didn't need to be, not wanting to cause you pain in any facet. He was sculpted like a god yet he could cradle you so softly you didn't know you were being held. He made you feel at peace, like a breeze running through your hair on a perfect day. He was the sun who lit up your once dull world, never again having to see another bloody winter. You grew and thrived under Wakatsuki's love.

The first time he told you about his job as a Kengan fighter his hands shook. He looked at the ground and didn't look up again until he heard your light laughter and reassuring words, telling him how you knew about the association already.

You wished you hadn't if only so you didn't have to replay your years with Hatsumi Sen aloud one last time for the world to hear.

You should have kept quiet. You should have played dumb and pretended not to know about the secret underground fighting world of the city you called home.

"You know about the Kengan fights?" It was your turn to look at the ground. Wakastuski's hands took yours, immediately seeing something was wrong with the droop of your shoulders and the tilt of your head. "Yeah. I had an awful ex who fought. We were together since we were teenagers." You sent him a small smile.

"If you don't mind me asking, my love, who was it?" Your hands clenched around his and he squeezed back.

"Hatsumi Sen."

After Wakastsuki had gotten over his initial shock of the history you shared with Sen, the man was nothing more than a brief chapter in the story of your life.

Years passed and Wakatsuki stood by your side through it all. He was there for you when you didn't get your job promotion and was there swinging you around when you were offered a better position by the Nogi Group, immediately taking the pay raise.

It was almost ironic how the world had sided with you.

You were happier than ever. Your days were honey-filled and your nights were sweeter than sugarcane. The stars twinkled at night and you started to enjoy your cold walks to work in the morning, something you never did before. The sun shone brighter and the colors of your and Wakatsuki's new home were the most vivid you had ever seen.

But everything paled in comparison to the day he proposed to you.

You were pacing your living room ranting about some subordinate that had been getting on your nerves lately, tossing back and forth whether you were actually going to fire him. You swayed toward no, and when you asked Wakatsuki what he thought, he merely nodded along and rose to fit feet.

"Baby, what's wrong?" He didn't speak a word as he made his way over to you, your arms reaching out for his hand which he pulled away.

Suddenly, he lowered himself down to one knee.

You saw your future flash before your eyes: a white dress, a loving husband, an adopted cat- it was all there. His vows brought tears to his eyes before they did yours, being too caught up at the sight of the man you loved down on one knee with the ring of your dreams in his hands.

"I've loved you for years and I'll love you until the end of time. Will you marry me?"

"Do you really have to ask?"

Your engagement was short and your wedding shorter, opting for an expensive honeymoon instead of an elaborate party for one night. Your dress now hung on display on the inside of your closet door, Wakatsuki's suit hanging on the inside of his.

Years of being chased and manipulated by one man led you to the best thing in your life.

And as you saw Hatsumi Sen storm out of the gathering room of the hotel where the Kengan Annihilation Tournament was held, you couldn't help but thank the universe for having you on her side.
