Cash did a hard U-turn, slinging Lori against the truck's door. A dust cloud grew in his wake. The sedan's driver swerved to miss the truck as it barreled back down the road. Slamming on the brakes, the driver threw the car into reverse and completed a three-point turn in the middle of the road.

Cash headed back to town and blew through two intersections before coming to a railroad crossing. The deep blast of the engine's whistle filled the cab of his truck. The warning lights were flashing red at the crossing. The bells were sounding. The caution arms were just starting to lower. The truck bounced across the tracks. The crossing arm just grazed the truck's back bumper.

"God, Cash! We made it! I hope you didn't damage your truck."

"Just another bruise on an old gal who's been around the block a time or two," he said.

"He didn't make it. He's still on the other side of the crossing," she said.

Lori breathed easier. Luck was on their side. As she glanced back, there was no end to the number of cars the train was pulling. Cash made several turns down the country roads. By the time he pulled off the road under a large oak tree, off the road and out of sight. Lori was lost.

Cash cut the motor.

"Well," he said, "exactly what just happened?"
