ACT II
CHAPTER XXVII

fire is always dangerous

THANA WATCHES THE screen in horror, she desperately wishes she hadn't seen it. She feels Rohan's arms around her as the faces of the two tributes who have fallen are shown. The crumbling of the building still echoing in her head, there where at least 4 tributes in the building at the time, so unsurprisingly another BOOM! Echoes through the room. Tears stream over her cheeks as another face is being shown, BOOM! And another face appears, all tributes in the building at that time have died. Horrifying soft screams can be heard under the victors; district 4 just lost both of their tributes, just as districts 10 and 11 lost their girl tribute. Not far from the building the careers who are still alive are coughing while smiling, all four deaths on their names as they made sure it would crumble when they would send those of district 4 in after the girl from 10 and 11.

In other screens you can see the other three tributes look around in wonder at the noise and tremble in the earth beneath their feet. Latif and Falia who were in a building run as fast as they can towards the stairs so they can leave and try to find another form of sanctuary. But as a chain reaction, multiple other buildings start to crumble. Including the one where Falia and Latif are trying to get out. As time seems to run out they hear a loud crash, the roof starts to fall down as they sprint to the door. With every step they take, more concrete and stones fall down and more dust spreads through the ground floor. Falia and Latif link hands as the door gets closer to them, the opening showing even more dust.

"What is this?" Thana cries as the screens show more fallen buildings and all the tributes running for their lives. "I hadn't planned for this even though me and Johanna talked about it just before this."

"I agree this is horrifying," Rohan holds her body even closer to himself as certain sponsors start to move towards those who still have tributes. "But we most keep hoping that he survives, with the amount of sponsors willing to influence we must play this right. The games move awfully fast this way."

On the screens, the boy from eight seems trapped in between buildings. As are the careers trying to be quick enough not to be crushed by concrete. Latif and Falia are still running to the door. The boy just before the girl, but they are still holding on to each other. As Latif makes it out of the building, it seems to crash even more. He tries to pull Falia out, but as she is in the door opening the whole building collapses. BOOM! The impact pushes Latif away from the building where a lifeless hand from the girl can be seen. Tears stream down the face of Latif Jardin as he gets up, he closes his eyes briefly before looking up into the sky that looks more like a brown mist than the clear blue sky they had the past few days. The sand doesn't seem to bother the boy, but than again he had been getting used to sand in his eyes when he worked in the fields. In the distance the boy can hear more buildings crumble and crashing into each other. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

"Ladies and gentlemen," the voice of Caesar is heard all over Panem. "I would like to remind the tributes that they are only left with 2. Sadly, the ending of the 73rd Hunger Games is closing in on us."

The victors see the faces of the last three deaths as the face of Falia disappears. Somewhere close to Thana she can hear disappointed shouts, some from victors and some from the people of the Capitol.

...

"Those careers where playing with fire," Thana recognizes the voice to be of Haymitch. "And see where it got them, haha, serves them right." He cheers to the screen as he pats Rohan on his back. "Seems like your boy and that of 8 are the only ones left in the game."

"They sure did play with fire," Rohan seems lost in thought as his eyes move to the mentors of district 8.

"And fire is always dangerous." Thana follows his eye line and takes his hand so they can move to Cecelia and her mentor partner.

"Just us then," Cecelia smiles and squeezes Thana's hand as their tributes tries to climb over the fallen pieces concrete. "I am curious how the game makers plan to let them meet."

"So am I," Rohan takes a sip of his coffee as the screen is split in two and shows two boys trying to find each other in the darkness of the dust that covers them like a night light.

"This air must be poison like," Thana says, "you can see both of them breathe in pain."

"Then they might not even meet before one falls," Cecelia smiles softly, "but I don't think that fate is that kind to them."

...

And like Cecelia says, after some time, Latif and the boy from eight run in to each other. Both completely out of breath as they realise this is and will be the end. A last tremble goes through the arena as they run towards each other. As if fire and water meet each other, they manage to counterattack each other perfectly for the first few strokes. Tears still stream over Latif's cheeks as the boy from 8 gets the upper hand. For a second the boy from 9 falters and let the boy from 8 get on top of him.

Thana gasps for air and lets Rohan take her hand as she is frozen in front of the screens, she isn't able to look away as the little knife of the boy from 8 closes in on the heart of her brother.

Her brother doesn't even look like his is fighting back. He just looks up to the sky that has started to clear up. I am sorry. Latif mouths up to the sky and then BOOM!

Nora speaking here!
Another chapter, yeah!

Anyway, did Latif survive? Who knows? I know... but that is besides the point. This story has completely captivated me again and i can't wait to write more <3
