EBONY HAD WOKEN UP EARLY in the familiar room of the dungeons. She had gotten dressed and ready for her first day back. Together with her friend and roommate Zoe, she walks down the corridor on their way to the Great hall. They don't talk much but they aren't hostile to one another either.

"Miss Black, your schedule." Professor Snape says, handing her the piece of parchment.

"Thank you, professor." She replies before leaving the Slytherin table and instead sitting down next to Lee and in front of Fred and George at the Gryffindor one.

"Morning Ebs." George greets, shoving more bacon and eggs into his mouth. Ebony rolls her eyes at the sight and looks down at her schedule.

"So, what classes do we have in common?" Lee asks, handing her his schedule to compare.

"Defense Against the Dark Arts later." Ebony replies, seeing it on both schedules. "Does any of you have Ancient Runes?"

"I do." Lee replies, smiling.

"Then we have that one in common too."

"Let me guess, you still do Arithmancy?" Fred asks, looking at Ebony curiously.

"Yep, not going to quit it either." Harry, Ron and Hermione sit themselves down next to the group.

"New third-year course schedules," said George, passing them over. "What's up with you, Harry?"

"Malfoy," said Ron, sitting down on George's other side and glaring over at the Slytherin table. The four of them look up in time to see Malfoy pretending to faint with terror again.

"That little git," George says calmly. "He wasn't so cocky last night when the dementors were down at our end of the train. Came running into our compartment, didn't he, Fred?"

"Nearly wet himself," says Fred, with a contemptuous glance at Malfoy.

"I wasn't too happy myself," says George. "They're horrible things, those dementors. . . ." George looks up at Ebony.

"Sort of freeze your insides, don't they?" Fred says.

"You didn't pass out, though, did you?" said Harry in a low voice.

"I did." Ebony replies.

"It gave us a heart attack." Lee says, continuing to eat his bacon. "A real scare, I'm telling you."

"You fainted?" Hermione asks.

"They were looking for my dad, of course they linger on me longer." They all hear the other Slytherins laugh again.

"I hate them." Harry snarls.

"Forget it, Harry," George says bracingly. "Dad had to go out to Azkaban one time, remember, Fred? And he said it was the worst place he'd ever been, he came back all weak and shaking. . . . They suck the happiness out of a place, dementors. Most of the prisoners go mad in there."

"Anyway, we'll see how happy Malfoy looks after our first Quidditch match," says Fred. "Gryffindor versus Slytherin, first game of the season, remember?"

"What makes you think you're going to win?" Ebony asks, raising her brow and smirking at him. "I became the Slytherin Chaser last year, remember?"

"Oh yeah..." George says, smirking back. "Lets bet on it."

"5 galleons for whoever wins." Fred says, holding out his hand.

"Deal." Ebony replies, shaking it and chuckling. "Though I must say, I'm the only girl on the team."
