Chapter 10: Charms Partner

Noelle's Perspective

Poppy didn't attend class one Monday morning, unfortunately.

Apparently, she was out hunting for these rare beasts outings by herself Sunday night and ended up in a scatter of Venomous Scurriors. The bites were bad, she had to spend the night in the Hospital Wing.

I was upset with her for not reaching out for help. She quoted, 'I know spiders aren't your best enemy,' and tried to excuse me that she wanted to be on her own.

Now, I was in Charms class that morning with no partner. The only space that was taken by Poppy was the same space that separated me from a Slytherin student beside her.

Now we were in a gap.

"Now, as I was saying in this lesson,"

Professor Ronan's voice orchestrated in the rounded classroom, but yet, my concentration was like a broken cell as my eyes could only pry in the corner, watching the familiar brown hairs move with every movement.

He tapped his quill willingly over Poppy's space. He was leaning against the desk and knowing Poppy wasn't there, he took advantage of using her free space to outstretch his arms better, his stupid quill nearing closer to me.

"Elle," A singing whistling voice tapped from behind mid-lecture. "...where's my girl Poppy?" Garreth whispered.

My eyes maintained on Ronan, hoping he wouldn't catch the whispers and I rolled my eyes. "She's not your girl, Weasley."

"I'm not losing her, am I? Is she alright?" Garreth said sarcastically. He was doing it for attention. Did he really care about Poppy? I had no clue, but I wasn't the messenger. "Did she receive my owl?"

A light chuckle bubbled over Sebastian's face from the corner of my eye. It was like a smirk from Garreth's use of words and I almost twitched an eye, not being able to tell if this was some sort of joke.

"I wouldn't know if she received your owl, Garreth," I snapped, turning around. "Maybe, if you actually go reach out to her in the Hospital Wing, you would know if she did."

Did I say that on purpose? Yeah, but it went both ways. I wasn't a messenger, and I also wasn't a joke — or for whatever reason Sebastian would've laughed about.

"Geez," Garreth clicked his tongue, looking over to Amit Thakkar from his side. "Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed, huh?"

I turned back to my seat, taking a breath and rewiring my thoughts thinking if I had said the wrong things from my emotions.

"This incantation is better performed with your peers, ladies and gents." Professor Ronen pointed with his wand, "Give it a go, and have fun! Prepare for a show and tell Wednesday!"

Great. The only day Poppy decides to break her perfect attendance record is the day we actually have to pair up together and work.

Partners weren't mandatory, but I lacked knowledge when it came to simple spells. It was funny because I knew lots of heavy jinxes and self-defense spell lists, but yet, I couldn't even perform an Alohomora until mid-year.

Poppy must've been tired of me.

"Great, I have Amit as a partner. This is an easy mark." Garreth said excitedly from behind.
