Chapter 4: The Power of A Gaunt

"It was the great escape, the prison break.
The light of freedom on my face,
but you weren't thinking."

Elle's Perspective

I'd forgotten how less forgiving Devil's Snare had been in Isidora's abandoned home. Worse when night crept up hauntingly. It might've been more pressuring when it was a running mission. To escape.

My breath was shaky, wand in hand to loomed around the stinging plant and lash it away. Boots sank into the cold, squelching into the slimy threat, but I managed and swallowed with each step.

I turned once behind me.

Ominis moved carefully, his wand raising more like a torch, much careful on the Devil's Snare. Yet, with blindness, there were parts I struggled to hold back and just warn him.

"Eh, don't step left!"

His boots made a squeaky sound, and he nearly slipped. Both of our wands faded and awful sounds of the thick vine-like plant began to coil around us.

"—shit!"

"Lumos," Ominis barked, letting his lit wand guide the exit.

The three second exit over the abandoned, leaking home became an eternity.

Bodies jumped like frogs, and though I'd been leading the way, I couldn't help but turn to Ominis to assure we exited at the same time without the hell-stinging devil cuffing our feet.

Silence overran the setting for a moment. Only the sounds of crickets and tree leaves moving in the spring air rang.

And heavy breaths.

"Are you okay?" I hadn't been staring at Ominis anymore. I could only stare at the view afar. We've been above Feldcroft. The highlands were right here.

"All limbs intact," Ominis said annoyingly. "—are you?"

Sarcasm wasn't his best trait, but I didn't pay attention to that. There wasn't time to. I waved a few hairs from my face from the sweat and nodded. "Yeah..."

Feldcroft from the angle was soothing. Before, one would often be invaded by Ranrok's Loyalists. It was still in existence, but not like before. Now...now, it looked pretty calm. Empty.

"You brought us to Feldcroft." Ominis noticed.

My brows furrowed, and before I could ask, I felt his presence beside me. He'd tracked down closer and wiggled his wand to motion something.
