Jeannette's POV

I don't really know what woke me up, but once I opened my eyes, my body felt so tired and heavy. I also felt starved and thirsty like I haven't eaten in years.

Without even looking around, I could tell someone else was resting their head on the bed because of the weight.

I looked down to see papa, asleep. He looked like he hasn't been sleeping for days, and I was worried.

But what happened to me?

My last memory was of Athy looking panicked right before I passed out.

I groaned as I sat up, and it I accidentally woke papa up. When he realized I was awake and okay, he immediately sat up as well.

"Jeannette," He says, relieved, "You're awake."

I nodded my head, "What happened?"

Instead of answering me, he stands up and says something to somebody at the door and comes back.

After seconds of silence, he finally says, "You were poisoned."

My eyes widened in shock.

Poisoned?

"But who would.." I mutter to myself, but papa hears it as well.

"It was that damned girl." Papa says as he grits his teeth.

Who?

"Who are you talking about? You've caught them?" I asked urgently.

"It was Athanasia." He says, and for a long time none of us said anything.

Athy?

I let it sink in. My stomach turned.

No, it wasn't her. It wasn't. I'm sure of it, and I don't doubt it.

Then slowly I looked up to papa.

"Father," I hesitated, hoping that my hunch was incorrect, "What did you do?"

Papa's eyes seemed to shake for a moment.

"Look," He sighs, "I know you two were close, but-"

"No!" I yelled.

He did something. He did something to her.

"What did you do?!" I asked desperately.

Papa was only silent. He didn't expect me to yell.

I immediately got up from my bed, "Where is she? I need to-"

But I couldn't walk any further as papa blocks me.

"Jeannette. No." He says firmly.

I shook my hand away, "Don't touch  me."

Papa looked hurt, "Jeannette, I only did what I had to."

"So what did you do?" I demanded.

"She was detained yesterday." He says simply, looking pained that he told me a harsh truth.

"How long has it been since the incident?"

"It's been three days."

"Three days? And what did the investigation conclude?"

Papa's expression implied that he was uneasy and uncomfortable about my question.

He detained her without question.

I clenched my fist, angry.

"You didn't hold any investigation?" I asked, incredulous.

Papa sighed in frustration, "I don't need  to."
