Nejis pov
I hummed softly to myself as we walked up a grassy hill. Shikamaru was right. This is a nice place.
I placed the bags down and sat down with a sigh. It was nice to get out and feel the wind in my hair. I can't remember the last time I had time to do that.
"I'm guessing you're enjoying yourself" I turned to shikamaru who was smiling smugly at me.
I nodded as I took my ponytail down "yeah this is a nice place. Do you come here often?"
"I used to come here all the time to get away from my parents. Now I wish I spent more time with them" there was a sadness in his eyes that I had never seen before. It made him feel more human.
"I miss my father too" I squeezed my knees tightly "sometimes I think we fought too much. I guess it's true that you never appreciate what you have until it's gone"
The two of us sat in a comforting silence before shikamaru turned to me with a smile "will you lie down with me for a second"
"Why?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Just trust me would ya!"
I rolled my eyes and lay down. Under me was a big blue sky dotted with white clouds.
"It's beautiful" I gasped.
"Isn't it" he smiled "ever since I was a kid I'd lay under here and count clouds when I was stressed. It's why I came to this place so often. And now I pass on my wisdom to you"
"Why thank you for your wisdom oh wise one" I said sarcastically which led to him tickling me. I giggled and we fought for a moment before he fell on top of me.
I froze. Intelligent eyes and a handsome face that hovered inches from my own. I was transported to that night again. That night that changed everything.
Shikamaru quickly sat up "let's go home"
"Good idea" I said quickly.
We walked back home in awkward silence.
