Wavering from the shadows, two figures were empty-handed as they left the building. It was still in the middle of the afternoon, and the sun was almost resting in its quarters. She let out a tired yawn as she covered her mouth, despite the mask that became a barrier to her being able to cover her mouth bare.
Tanizaki sighed in relief that they had finished work earlier than they anticipated. (Y/n) muttered 'good work' to Tanizaki as her eyes indicated her smile. Her eyes were smiling, and Tanizaki reciprocated the act as he also gave her 'good work' for today's case. The two teenagers walked towards the station, silently screaming for a good night's sleep after the exhausting day they had at work.
Tanizaki and (Y/n) were conversing along the way, with (Y/n) doing most of the listening as Tanizaki also shared his side of the story and vice versa. This was their first time having a long conversation since before they never talked much since their work together as partners was usually near the Agency, so their conversation was kept to a minimum.
"I've never had an inkling of a thought that you had a younger sister." (Y/n) expressed her thoughts aloud with a visible expression of being stunned by his revelation. Tanizaki nervously chuckled at this. "I thought that you were the youngest." She added a mutter.
"It was still amazing how we were able to solve the case within a day." Tanizaki smiled at this, once again diverting the topic to something else to continue their conversation. It was his first accomplishment in finishing the case in a day, as it usually takes days due to thorough investigation and deduction. (Y/n) had smiled beneath her mask as Tanizaki was able to influence her on how he looked ecstatic for today's case. (Y/n) is also grateful for being partnered with Tanizaki since seeing her odd colleagues would be a bad mentor for him, at least from her perspective.
An example of this was Dazai's lack of motivation to teach and instead tease Kunikida to be able to make fun of his predictable outbursts, and then Kunikida would lash out in his exasperation at him. Kunikida would also be a great mentor. However, based on her observations when she accompanied the certain duo (Dazai and Kunikida) on a case, he is strict and harsh and would often make an interrogation instead of just simply questioning them. She was afraid that Tanizaki would adopt this kind of behavior when investigating and questioning the suspected person in a case.
Ranpo would not take on any mundane tasks, so he is eliminated from the list of possible people who can show the rookie the ropes. She didn't have any comments on her current medical teacher, as she had only a vague idea of how she works as a detective. Yosano is still capable, calm, and composed even in serious situations. However, she sometimes had sadistic tendencies. Even (Y/n) had second thoughts if she could mentor Tanizaki well during cases.
She is not a great example of a mentor either, but considering the oddballs of the Agency, she thought she was the only individual who was capable of doing so. Despite her aloof exterior, she was easy to approach, as said by the other office staff in the Agency.
"It was all due to your hard work, Tanizaki-san." She complimented him as her eyes were fixated on the sidewalk. Their distance was already fairly close to the train station, and they are now not in a hurry as the train hasn't arrived yet.
