It had been a few days since the incident with Lo'ak, and Akaia had been glued to her siblings. She hadn't left their home aside from getting her sleeping medication from Ronal, which had really helped. She also hadn't seen Mak'korro in that time, and honestly, she was missing his presence more than anything right now. She had never been affected by a person like this before. Akaia was normally quite an independent person, especially when they lived in the forest. But now, her mind was constantly occupied with him.The girl was currently re-braiding Neteyam's hair, skilfully plaiting the long strands. Kiri sat in front of them, creating what looked to be a top. Akaia looked out toward the balcony of the marui, watching as Lo'ak played with Tuk. She smiled before turning her attention back to her task.
"So Akaia..." Kiri said suddenly, catching her attention. Akaia and Neteyam both looked at her. "What's going on with you and the chief's son?" Akaia froze as Neteyam groaned.
"Come on, Kiri. I don't want to hear about Akaia's love life," he whined, covering his ears. Both girls rolled their eyes.
"Well, go away then. I want to talk about it," Kiri snapped back, making a shooing gesture.
"Fine. Can you finish my hair after?" he asked, pouting slightly. Akaia laughed and nodded. Neteyam smiled before walking off to join Tuk and Lo'ak.
Kiri turned back to Akaia with a mischievous grin. "So, what's going on between you and Mak'korro?"
Akaia's eyes dropped to her crossed legs, a blush blooming across her cheeks. "I like him a lot, Kiri," she admitted.
Kiri laughed. "I can see that, silly. But what's going on? I saw the way he was holding your hand the other day."
"He always holds my hands... like, every time we're together," Akaia mumbled.
"Well, he must like you!" Kiri said, beaming. "Teenage boys don't just grab girls' hands for fun. Plus, I've seen the way he looks at you. He definitely likes you."
Akaia fiddled with her fingers, unsure. "I dunno, Kiri. He's the next Olo'eyktan. I'm sure his parents wouldn't want him with someone like me."
"Someone like you?" Kiri frowned.
"I'm sure they want him with a Metkayina girl," Akaia sighed, avoiding her sister's eyes.
Kiri reached forward and grabbed her hand. "It doesn't matter what his parents want. If he loves you, he'll fight for you—like Mum and Dad did. He'd be a fool not to like you, Akaia. You're literally the epitome of beautiful. And you're a talented warrior, which I'm sure he finds very attractive."
Akaia rolled her eyes with a shy laugh as Kiri squeezed her hand.
"You're also one of the most caring and selfless people I know. You fight for our family constantly, even putting your life on the line for us. Our whole family would be lost without you, Akaia. You're the glue keeping us all together, no matter how rough things get. He'd be absolutely mental not to like you."
Tears welled in both of their eyes as Akaia leaned forward and wrapped her arms around her younger sister. Kiri hugged her back tightly, resting her head against Akaia's shoulder.
"Thank you, Kiri. I love you," Akaia whispered, pressing a kiss to her sister's head.
They remained in their embrace until a soft knock sounded at the entrance. They both pulled apart, glancing toward the doorway. Akaia's eyes widened as she saw Mak'korro standing there, already looking at her.
Kiri smirked knowingly.
Out on the balcony, Neteyam and Lo'ak had already noticed the boy and were glaring daggers in his direction.
"Hey," Mak'korro said, "I was just wondering if I could borrow Akaia for a bit?"
Kiri beamed and nudged her sister. "Of course, she's all yours."
Akaia rolled her eyes, standing and making her way toward him. As always, he reached out to take her hand. She could hear Kiri giggling behind her as she entwined her fingers with his.
Mak'korro chuckled softly at her embarrassed expression as they walked away from the home.
"So, what is it that you wanted?" she asked, eyes still flicking toward their joined hands.
"Do I need a reason to see you?" he replied with a grin.
Her face heated up instantly. She bit her lip to hide her smile, butterflies fluttering in her stomach.
He watched her blush with a small smile, his eyes dropping to her lips for a brief second before returning to her eyes.
"Well, what do you want to do?" she asked, stopping in her tracks and looking up at him, her cheeks still rosy.
He stopped beside her, turning to face her completely. She looked breathtaking. These past few days, she had consumed his thoughts. Even his father had noticed how distracted he'd been.
"Why don't we go on a little adventure?" he suggested, watching a cheeky grin form on her lips.
"An adventure?" she repeated as he started pulling her gently toward the water.
"I think I know a place you'll really like," he said, flashing her a charming smile over his shoulder.
"I dunno, Mak'korro. I'm a hard person to please," she teased.
He rolled his eyes with a grin. "Trust me. I know you'll like this."
