EVELYN DREW PATTERNS IN THE PALM OF HER DAUGHTERS HAND, lulling the two year old further into sleep as she basked in the comfort provided by her mother

They'd only been in the car five minutes and faiths tiny head had already fallen on the teenagers shoulder as she snored softy. God, how Evelyn wished she could do that— fall asleep in a blink of an eye. Maybe then she could disappear from the awkward, deafening silence that had loomed over the car since they'd gotten in

no one dared to speak. Maya was too scared that she'd let the anger evoked by Veronica cloud her emotions.

Carina was worried her voice would reveal the sadness she felt since she'd first laid eyes on her foster daughter who had so obviously been failed by the system set up to protect her.

Evelyn had been taught to never speak unless spoken too and Faith was too busy snoring to care

oh, how Evelyn wished she could be two again

"are you hungry, sweets?" Maya asked turning round in her seat to face the teen, finally having the courage to speak after an encouraging nod from her wife who sat in the drivers seat

Evelyn didn't answer, not even sure if Maya was even talking to her. Why would she care? She asked herself eyes unmoving from her dirty shoes, pretending to find interest in them

"we've got a long two hour drive ahead of us, we can stop somewhere to grab a bite?" Maya tried again, and it was only when the 15 year old lifted her eyes up slightly she realised Maya was looking directly at her,

She was talking to her

Evelyn shifted uncomfortably in her seat, not liking the attention on her one bit as she noticed her other foster mother, Carinas eyes on her through the rear view mirror as they both awaited her answer. She was starving. She hadn't ate since Thursday lunch time, but she did only have 14 dollars to her name right now and she was sure the Porsche driving couple weren't planning to stop at McDonalds or the dollar tree for dinner so she'd have to suffer for another day or two before she could eat again
