Hazel was awakened by a strange noise. Calmly she opened her eyes and looked around. Her room in her adoptive parents' house was nothing special. A bed, a cupboard, a desk with a chair and a gray carpet in front of the bed. Next to the bed was a small bedside table with an oil lamp. Her school uniform was on the chair, and on the table was a washbowl, her hair bow, and her comb. Nothing was unusual that day.

That clanking knock again.

Her eyes darted to the window and she almost gave out a startled scream. An owl? Hazel knew that owls were very clever. After all, owls used to come and go in and out of her birth parents' house in those days, delivering packages. She remembered being almost killed by one once. >What is that owl doing?< she asked herself. Had she accidentally kicked that owl or otherwise incurred her anger? No. She shook her head, pulled back the covers, and began getting ready for school. The uniform, like herself, was anything but special. A white blouse, closed in front with gray buttons, and a dark blue blazer with the school crest on it. A dark blue skirt matching the blazer which reached just below the knees. Black shoes and, since it was winter, black tights. But today she was feeling cold, so she put on the black pullover, which also belongs to the uniform, over the blouse. After combing, she tied her long reddish blond hair into a high ponytail with her white hairband and attached her beloved silver snake clasp to it. This owl was knocking all the Time. If she wasn't somewhat apathical to the world around her, she might have gotten angry, but she just ignored it.

A last look in the mirror told her that everything was perfectly in Place, the only thing others would probably notice, were her bright green Eyes, which were completely empty. Hazel stared into her Eyes for a moment, before shaking her head again, grabbing her school bag and walking out of the room. Her adoptive parents were still asleep, they had to get up in an hour and that was just fine with Hazel. She didn't want to bother them unnecessarily with her presence. They didn't really get along, although it wasn't that they didn't get along either.

Hazel took an apple and left the small house of the Eldenburry family. She was lucky, while other students had to walk long distances or even use carriages, she only had a 20-minute walk to get to the school. As she often did, she looked around absently as she dropped her bag in shock and stared into an alleyway across the street. Did someone just... disappeared there? She could have sworn there was an elderly gentleman standing in that alley a second ago, then a strange noise and... he was gone.

A touch on her shoulder brought Hazel back to the present. It was a classmate, but Hazel hadn't bothered to remember the names. A fairly friendly girl from her year. "Everything Okay? Has something happened?" she asked. Hazel shook her head, took one last look down the alley, and then picked up her bag. "No nothing" she murmured. Then Hazel turned around without a word and continued walking towards the school.

The fact that Hazel hardly said anything was nothing new to the students at the academy she attended, so her classmate didn't force her to change that either. Arriving at school, Hazel sat straight down in her seat, put her books, notebook and fountain pen on her desk.

The school day, as always, was uneventful until the end. Lessons ended shortly after 12 noon. Some students still played lacrosse or soccer. Some still had choir practice or other extracurricular activities, but not Hazel. She used to leave school and sit under a tree and read before going home to cook for her adoptive parents. Today, however, fate seemed to have other plans for her.
