Is it possible to love in a world like this?
To let raw affection into your bloodstream, to let it manipulate the way your heart beats and the way it pumps out a myriad of thoughts and feelings?
Is it possible to even feel anymore?
I don't know.
I've never known.
It feels as if I've been severed from the roots that anchor me to the right of experiencing emotion. Being a soldier has stripped away that right over and over again, leaving me bare and exposed to the brutal winds of life that never seem to let up.
Or so I thought. Maybe I'm healing, slowly, but surely...
Do roots grow back?
I don't know.
I've never known.
But I'd like too think they do.

"And I can't believe I had the guts to taint something so beautiful."

I sat at the foot of my bed, the cushiony mattress sinking beneath me, my body leaving a subtle indent.
The look on his face when I had said those words was something I'll never forget, something never to be lost to the tides of my mind.
And yet, I have no idea how I ended up here. I can't recall anything after that.
It's like I just shut down.
I was feeling sorry for myself again.
How pathetic. How very pathetic.
"Screw this." I snapped at myself with venom behind my teeth, rising off the bed and storming toward the door, swinging it open with so much force I could feel the wind created sweep past my face.
To my surprise, someone stood there.
"Mikasa?" I blinked, somewhat embarrassed she had seen me in that state, even if just briefly. My brow lifted, eyeing her with burning curiosity.
"Can I ask you something?" She got straight to the point.
"Of course, anything." I granted, keeping my ears sharp as I prepared to hear her question. I felt worry bubble within my gut, hoping she wasn't here for anything worrisome.
Mikasa stood still, here eyes flickering up to mine after drifting momentarily to my hand on the doorknob.
"How do you deal with him?"
"Who?"
"That pipsqueak." Oh.
I bit my cheek in order to restrain a somewhat aggravated groan. Quite honestly, I wasn't in the best of moods right now. Typical of me; always in a horrible mood that I like to drown myself in.
