JUNGKOOK

Jungkook sat on the small
single bed, trying to ignore
how painfully thin the
mattress was as he watched
his mom unpack stacks of
books from one of the
many boxes that were
scattered at her feet.

It was move-in day at the
dorms and while he'd been looking forward to this day
since well, since forever,now
all he could think about was
how much he wanted it to
be over.

His mom looked back over
her shoulder and frowned.

She wasn't a fan of idle hands, and Jungkook braced himself
for a list of tasks he should be doing instead of sitting down.

"Jungkook, do you want
these books arranged by
height or title or maybe
color?" she asked.

He hesitated, certain that
she was going to follow the question up with something
a little more acerbic but
instead, she just arched an eyebrow, inquisitively and
waited for him to answer.

That was new.

Maybe she was trying to cut
him some slack, since it was supposed to be a pretty monumental day.

"Just leave it please Mom."

"I can do that stuff later."

"Are you sure? You're going
to have a lot to take care of when your dad and I leave."

"We might as well help out
while we're here."

Jungkook knew that she was
just trying to help and he couldn't blame her for
needing to burn off some
of her nervous energy.

Helping her youngest son
move into the dorms was a pretty big day for her, too.

And he normally wouldn't even mind her compulsive need to organize and straighten and control his life he'd become accustomed to it after eighteen years under the same roof
but he just couldn't today.

The whole afternoon had
been exhausting.

Between trying to find his way around campus, meeting or at least seeing hordes of new people and the anxiety of
having all of his belongings scattered around in boxes,
he just needed some time
and space and quiet.

But it didn't look like he was going to get any of those
things anytime soon and probably not for the next
nine months that he'd be required to live in the
freshman dorms.

He looked out the second-
story window, to the dozens
of people scurrying around, parents in tow, hauling
boxes to their new homes
away from home.

Jungkook wondered if any of them would be in his classes
next week.

If maybe some of them
might be friendly.

If any of them might feel the same way he did, impossibly alone even in the middle
of all the chaos.

Why had he thought that
moving to the dorms would
be a good idea?

Jeon Jungkook, the guy with more issues than a magazine rack all he could hope for was
to try and fit in, or at least be invisible enough to blend in.

And he hadn't even met his roommate yet but Jungkook
was seriously hoping that
he'd wait an extra day or
two before moving in.

Just long enough to give
him some time to adjust.

Even if it was just over
night, it would be helpful.

Then of course, he'd have to
deal with the worry that they might not be very compatible.
