Espresso's age: 6

"Mama?" Espresso mumbled, trying to open the door. "Mama, you forgot to unlock the door."

"I told you not to call me that," Her harsh voice called through the door.

Espresso stood there, confused. "Mama..?"

"Don't call me that!"

"Oh. Okay. Mother, you forgot to unlock the door," He said, trying to turn the door handle again. Still locked.

"I didn't forget."

He tilted his head in confusion. What did she mean, she didn't forget? A smile grew on Espresso's face. Maybe she was just playing a silly game. He giggled. "Hehe, okay!" He laughed. "That's funny, Mother."

"It's not supposed to be funny, dumbass."

The smile faded off his face.

"God, are you honestly that stupid??" Mother groaned through the door. "I locked the door on purpose. You really had to have it spelled out for you, huh?"

"Oh," He mumbled, furrowing his eyebrows as he paused. "Why did you lock the door?"

"To keep you in your room."

"Why?"

"Cause you're annoying as fuck."

Espresso's eyes widened. That was the scary curse word his parents only said when he made them super mad. But... What did he do wrong? "I'm sorry, Mama- I mean, Mother," He said softly. "I didn't mean to make you mad."

His mother didn't say anything.

"Mama..?"

He was answered by his mother banging her fist on the door, causing him to flinch and stumble back in fear. "Shut up! Your whiny little voice makes me want to reach down your throat and rip your vocal cords out!"

He shivered. "I-I'm sorry, Mama!" Tears filled his eyes. "I'm sorry."

"Don't fucking call me that!!" She screamed, banging against the door once more. "Don't make me come in there."

He stood there, staring at the door with wide eyes. "Why aren't you letting me out..?"

"I already told you; you're annoying and I want a few minutes of silence, do you hear me? I want a few minutes without hearing your whiny and needy voice. That's all I ask."

He stayed silent.

"I gave you life, Espresso. I brought you into this world, and all I get in return is your pathetic self always asking for things. I'm hungry! I'm thirsty! I'm tired! My clothes don't fit! You forgot to pack me lunch for school! You haven't given me a bath in days!" She mocked.

Espresso frowned. He didn't sound like that...

"That's all I hear from you. I'm sick and tired of it!"

"I'm sorry I'm annoying, Mother," He mumbled, picking at the tips of his fingers. "I won't be annoying anymore."

"Good boy."

"Will you let me out now..?"

"Absolutely not," She sneered. Espresso heard her step away from the door. "Go play with your dumb teddy or something."

Espresso pouted his lip. "Mr Teddy is not dumb!" He insisted. "He's very sophisticated! I even made him wear a tie!" He looked over at Mr Teddy, who was lying on his bed. Mr Teddy was Espresso's favorite stuffy ever; he was nice and fancy and very, very smart.

"I don't care," Mother groaned. "Just leave me alone."

He listened as Mother's footsteps faded away, leaving Espresso alone. He frowned.

A sigh escaped his lips as Espresso stood up, grabbing Mr Teddy to play with him. He sat back down on the floor. "Hi, Mr Teddy."

"Hi, Espresso!" He made his teddy answer back. "You look a little sad. What's wrong?"

Espresso frowned. "Mama- I mean, Mother locked me in my room," He sighed.

"Again?"

"Again."

Espresso pretended Mr Teddy was frowning. "Aww, that's too bad. Do you wanna talk about it?"

A smile crept back onto his face. He liked making his teddy care about him and his feelings, since... Nobody else cared. "Yes, please." He nodded. "See, 'cause, Mother is in a bad mood, and I think I made her super duper angry."

"Mhm." Espresso made Mr Teddy nod.

"I dunno why, though. I never know why! She always tells me I make her life sooo bad, but she never ever tells me why."

"That's not very kind of her."

"It certainly isn't," Espresso responded, happy his teddy agreed with him. "Plus, when she got really mad, she said a bad word." Espresso leaned in close to his teddy's ear. "You wanna know what word it was?"

"Yeah."

Espresso giggled. He lowered his voice as much as he possibly could. "She said... fuck."

He pretended Mr Teddy's jaw dropped in shock. "That's not a nice word!"

"Mhm. That's why I'm not allowed to say it. Only mean and angry people, like Mother and Father, are allowed to say it," Espresso whispered, hugging Mr Teddy close. "I'm never gonna curse. Ever. It's mean, and can hurt someone's feelings!"

Espresso looked at the clock. It was 8:00, and the sun was just starting to set, casting a red glow through the window. He yawned. "Mr Teddy, when do you think Mother will let me out of my room?" He asked. "And answer honestly. Don't sugarcoat it." He stared Mr Teddy in the eyes to make sure he wasn't trying to lie to make him feel better.

Espresso thought for a moment before answering in Mr Teddy's voice. "I dunno, Espresso. Maybe sometime tomorrow."

He frowned. "But that's a long time! I wanna go out now so I can eat!" Right on cue, his stomach growled. It had been two whole days since his parents fed him.

"You'll have to be strong," He said in a serious tone.

Espresso sighed. "Yeah. You're right. I gotta be strong." He smiled. "And maybe Latte will come and open the door before Mother does! Then I'll be happy." He yawned.

"It's time to sleep, Espresso."

Espresso nodded, smiling. Mr Teddy was always so smart. He climbed into his bed, closing his tired eyes as he cuddled close to his teddy. He was so glad he had Mr Teddy. He was there for him when nobody else was.
