CASSIDY SOLACE WAS A PITIED CHILD. It was a fact that no one said aloud, but everyone in Hawkins, Indiana knew. It wasn't that Cassidy was brought up wrong, or that she was an outcast, it was because of the reason the Solace family had moved to Hawkins. Cassidy had moved from Seattle, Washington with her father, Theodore Solace, after her mother, Naomi Solace, committed suicide the day after Cassidy was born. September 15th, 1971.

When she had turned eight, Cassidy's father had sat her down on their sofa in their first apartment over the Radio Shack, taking his own seat in his blue, worn armchair, checkered shirt hanging over the back of it. He told her that her mother had killed herself because she couldn't cope with motherhood, that she had seen Cassidy in her arms and had got overwhelmed. He had told Cassidy over and over again that it wasn't her fault that Naomi had died, but deep down, Cassidy knew that wasn't true. She was the reason for her mother's suicide, but she wouldn't be sure until the week one of her best friends went missing in the woods.

Cassidy had moved to Hawkins when she was only a week old, Theo having needed to get out of Seattle as quickly as possible. He couldn't bear to look at the home he and Naomi had built together, after they had promised each other an eternity of love. He couldn't bear to live somewhere his wife had grown to hate enough to kill herself. So he brought himself and his daughter back to the place he had grown up, Hawkins. He wanted her to have a normal life, a life where she would grow up, get married, get a job, be herself. He loved his daughter enough to give her a second chance, a second beginning.
