IT HAD BEEN A LONG YEAR

IT HAD BEEN A LONG YEAR. Cassidy didn’t know how else to explain it. She couldn’t just use one word. Fun? Sure. Complicated? Definitely. Sad? Sometimes. But long really took the cake. Long. How long it had been. It felt like it had stretched for an infinity, and Cassidy was exhausted. If she was going to explain, she’d have to go from the start. The very start. From Christmas, when Grayson Cutler turned up on their front door.

Her mother’s son. The one they — she and her father — had believed to be gone forever. He had been given up for adoption as soon as he was given birth, didn’t even have a name, yet here he was now, name and all. Another product of the mistakes forced on Cassidy’s mother. Quite honestly, with everything that had happened to her, she should have seen it coming. Of course all of it would end with her half-brother making himself known again.

She couldn’t even blame him for appearing. Her whole life she had spent her time trying to find out everything she could about her mother, and she had an easy way of doing so. She had a dad who loved her. She had a nice home. She had a group of friends, all of whom would die for each other as the past had shown. She couldn’t ask for anything more.
