THE HOSPITAL ROOM WAS DIM, only one lamp on at the side of the bed. Cards, flowers, teddy bears, a relentless sea of presents that were made up of expected congratulations and hopes for a life of happiness covered each and every surface, not a single inch of room on the dresser, or nightstand, or windowsill still able to be seen. The blinds were half shut, each break in them sending a strand of moonlight onto the linoleum floor, reflecting across the paper-like bed sheets that were never quite as comfortable as someone recovering could have hoped. There was a constant beeping and buzzing from each machine surrounding the bed; heart rate and blood pressure monitor, radio mumbling from a different room and the digital clock humming past midnight, September 15th, 1971, beginning like any other.

Except this wasn’t unlike any other. Naomi stared down at her daughter in her arms, watching as the child slept like an angel, mouth half open and eyelashes curled perfectly for being only five hours old. The blanket was wrapped around her daughter tightly, keeping her close and warm and safe, the only three things she had ever wished for her. The nurse had asked if Naomi wanted her daughter to be put in the nursery for the night so that she could relax, but Naomi didn’t want to part with the baby. She didn’t think she ever could.

Theodore was asleep in a chair in the corner, his jacket barely covering his body and his glasses on the floor, the exhaustion having hit him so quickly that he didn’t have time to take them off carefully. Naomi smiled gently at the sight before looking back at her daughter, watching as the baby made a small noise of sleepiness and opened her eyes, the brown a beautiful compliment to her wisps of dark hair on her scalp. Her daughter began to smile at the sight of the woman, making Naomi return the expression, filled with love.
