CASSIDY HELD THE FIGURINE OF WILL'S CHARACTER in front of her as she sat back on the couch in her basement, unsure what to do with herself anymore. Since last night, her mind had just felt shut off, not able to register her own emotions. Cassidy couldn't even begin to think that the boy she carried to bed every night since they were two was dead, and she would never get to see him be tucked in by his mom ever again. She would never see him slowly fall asleep as they watched whatever TV show was on that night ever again. She would never see him ever again.

Will had been her friend for eleven years, and seeing someone she had known to be so bright and happy be pulled out of the Quarry, drowned and pale. Her mind hadn't come to terms with it. Maybe it never would. Sometimes, Cassidy thought her brain couldn't keep up with her own thoughts or emotions, that maybe something was wrong with some circuits in her body, but then she guessed it was just the five stages of grief. She knew it started with denial, but she never remembered what came after. That might be because she had never actually gotten that far.

When she found out what happened with her mother, she skipped every part of the process of grief and decided to just accept her responsibility then and there. She decided it was her fault that her mother killed herself because her mother did what she did after she was born. Because she couldn't deal with motherhood. Because the idea of having Cassidy as a daughter was too much for her mother. Cassidy didn't even feel a need to blame her, because living with herself after that had been too much for her as well.
