After an amazing dinner, Jake and I made our way to his club. And I made sure to tease him throughout the dinner. By the time we were leaving, I had him cursing out loud for making concrete plans with the new investors.
As we stepped into the building, I was immediately blown away with what I was seeing. The vibe and the atmosphere was something out of this world. Every person in the place was dressed in black and had a matching black masquerade mask.
The rest of the room was decorated in black and silver and, to my astonishment, didn't even look like the same club I frequented in the last few weeks.
The hostess spotted Jake and hurried herself towards us, greeting him with a nervous smile.
"Everything is ready and done as you specified" she passed him a couple of masks and gave me a courteous nod "the investors showed up ten minutes ago and Jessica is entertaining them in the VIP lounge"
Jake thanked her and placed the mask gently on my face, looping the black elastic over my head and repeated the motion on himself.
I couldn't help but stare at him as he grabbed my hand and started leading me up the stairs. The man in front of me couldn't be more gorgeous.
The black suit mixed with the mask moved him into another category of sexy. I couldn't believe this man was holding my hand. Every fibre in my body concentrated on his movement and wanted to do things to him that I would never dream of saying out loud.
I knew I was infatuated beyond words, but a small other feeling was starting to build as well.
A feeling I felt foolish to even entertain.
"Mila, are you ok?" I realized we stopped moving and Jake was looking at me with worry.
"Yeah. I'm fine" I gave him a reassuring smile. How could I tell him that I stopped listening to him because I was contemplated the depths of my feelings.
He frowned his brow but decided to take my word for it.
As we approached the group of investors he gave my hand a little squeeze and began his introductions.
As expected, after a few minutes, the conversation turned to business and I was doing exactly what I was hoping I wouldn't have to do.
I continued to fake interest and remained engaged as Jake flashed me an apologetic look. For this man I'd sacrifice the rest of the night listening to the investors talking about capital gains on properties, expansions and chains.
As I tried to suppress another yawn, I spotted Katia entering through the front door and excused myself to go and greet her.
"Oh thank god" I practically threw myself into her arms.
"I take it is been a great night so far?" She made an all knowing face and hugged me back, "be grateful that they aren't wall-street investors. No amount of alcohol can make a night seem fun with that bunch"
She put on her mask and dragged me over to the bar.
"What are we drinking?" She waved over the bartender and ordered shots before I could even answer.
"Shots I guess?" I gave her a little nudge and she laughed out loud.
"It took you too long to answer" she squinted her nose and laughed again.
"You're in a great mood" I nudged her again and wiggled my brows suggestively. "I take it things are going well"
"We're not talking about it" she pushed the shot over and ordered a few more, "fuck it. I was going to pace myself but life's too short." She gave me the biggest grin and after downing a couple more, she pulled me onto the dance floor.
I don't remember ever seeing her this happy. I made a mental note to schedule a double date in an effort to get to know Marco a bit better. I didn't know the man but I already adored him.
Katia wasn't an easy person to crack, but I knew when the right person came along, her rough exterior would shatter like ice.
"Another drink?" I yelled over the music and nodded towards the bar. "We should probably head on up and see how Jake is doing. I'm not sure if it's rude of me to be down here with you or if I should be up there keeping him company"
Before Katia could respond the bar tender leaned over and whisper yelled,
"Hey, you're Mila right?" I nodded, "Jessica called down and said that Jake's waiting for you in his office"
"Ok thanks" I reached into my purse and grabbed my wallet to pay him. "Fuck"
"What?" Katia glanced at me concerned.
"I lost my phone. Fuck" I started rummaging through my tiny purse as it would just magically reappear "I don't even know when I had it last"
"Maybe you didn't even bring it with you?" She looked hopeful.
"Maybe" I answered and grabbed her arm. Now more than ever I needed to talk to Jake. Maybe someone could check his bedroom or the car to see if if I left it behind and they could find it.
We made our way up and greeted the investors while slowly making our way to the back office.
As I opened jakes door I was met with complete darkness.
"Hello? Jake" I spoke into the room unsure if anyone was actually in there.
"Get out" I heard Jake yell and curse "how the hell did you even get in here? The doors supposed to be locked?"
I froze, Something didn't feel right.
Shaking, I felt along the wall and found the light switch.
The lights filled the room making my eyes protest from the bright assault.
"Jake?" I looked over at the man I thought was a godsend sitting back in his chair with a blonde woman straddling him.
I guess he does have a type.
"Go to hell Jake" I held back whatever I was feeling and turned to run. As I sprinted my way down the stairs I heard his shouts calling after me.
Before he could make a move to come after me, Katia intercepted him with a loving punch to the face.
As I ran out into the parking lot, Jessica's grinning face was the last thing I remember seeing before the tears took over and began to fall.
