After a whole day of sightseeing, I settled on spending a little down time at a cafe around the corner from the hotel I was staying at.
It was owned by an local older couple and the charm of this little coffeehouse was indescribable. I watched as people walked in and out, ordering coffee and pastries, smiling, exchanging gossip, and catching up on what their families were up to and whatnot.
It was perfect and I couldn't imagine a more amazing place. Everything about it was warm and inviting and although I didn't feel ok, being here helped. It gave me a sense of peace and a feeling that things were going to be ok.
I was caught staring at the coffee shop owners, again, and gave them a timid smile. The older lady came up and refilled my coffee, making small talk in the process.
I felt at ease and made a mental note to stop by, at least one more time, before I moved on.
I decided it was time to pack it up and left an additional tip on the table. The hotel was a three minute walk and it was starting to rain a bit. I figured I would need to hurry as the clouds rolling in Looked much worse.
I stepped into the hotel lobby just as the rain began to pour outside and was greeted by the attendant behind the front desk. I made my way to my room before he could stop me and talk my ear off. He was polite, but didn't know the social cue to shut up. I didn't want to spend another hour talking to him as I had better plans.
I figured I would take a warm bath and read a book before I studied the bus route/schedule to find my next destination.
I was just about to change when I heard a soft knock on the door. I peered through the little peephole and saw a young man, dressed in an impeccable suit, standing on the other side of the door.
I stopped for a second and debated whether I should open the door or not. Convincing myself that it was just the hotel manager, I reluctantly opened it.
"Hello, are you Mila Silva?" The young man gave me a warm smile and waited, a bit too excitedly, for my answer.
"Yes, can I help you?" I was a little impatient and wanted to know what this was about.
The young man didn't reply but, instead, passed me a cell phone and walked away. My heart dropped and I scowled. I couldn't believe I was found so quickly.
No longer than five minutes passes when the phone started to ring.
"Hello?" I pouted as a child before I picked up.
"Miss Silva, I never thought I would say this, but it's wonderful to hear your voice" I recognized the amused party right away.
"Gary, back to stalking me I see" I was so careful, "how did you find me?"
"You're no secret agent. You paid with cash but still needed to provide your ids and credit card for incidentals. It was very easy actually" he chuckled in my ear and I wanted to throw the phone against the wall.
"Ok, well now that you've explained that, care to tell me why you are harassing me?" I wasn't overly amused and more mad at myself not thinking things through better.
"and here i thought we were best friends. we have come so far from our first meeting" another chuckle. If I didn't know any better, I would actually believe he liked me.
"I'll make sure to invite you to Christmas. Now get to the point. You're not one for small talk, I know that much about you" I was embarrassed that I was being so rude, but I was masking the fact that I wanted to cry in the best way I knew how.
"Wonderful, I'll keep my calendar open. Now, we need to meet in person and talk. There's a lot I need to say that you need to hear" the playfulness was now gone.
"Why would I do that?" I plopped down on my bed and anxiously awaited his answer.
"Because I know that if you don't, you will regret it and call me back anyways. So let's not waste each others time and skip all that. I'll meet you back at the coffee house you just came from, I just need a couple of hours to get there. So let's say at seven" and true to Gary's style, he hung up.
"Creep" I breathed out. Not wanting to waste a gift, I hooked up the phone to the hotels wifi and made my way to the bath. I would try and put the talk out of my mind, for now, and focus on what's going on in the world.
