they say have courage, and i'm trying to. i'm right out here for you. [...] we only have each other, it's just you and me. what are we going to do? do you want to build a snowman?
Being in an orphanage with so many other kids wasn't how Taylor wanted to spend her holidays. She wished she had parents, but the truth of the matter was, that she would probably never get any. She was 15, and no one wanted a teenager. She, and most of the other teenagers in the home, had accepted it. They were all unwanted, and they knew that. Mostly though, they had each other. They tried their best to lift each other's spirits during times like this. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn't. The door to the room she shared with 3 other teenagers and a seven-year-old opened, revealing the two people she had grown closest to over the years of being here. She was lucky to have them and that they hadn't been shipped off like some of the others over time.
"TAYLOR!" Selena screamed as she bounced in and hopped onto Taylor's bed. Taylor could never understand how this girl stayed so happy and positive all of the time. It wasn't as if she had anything to be particularly happy about. She was had a bubbly spirit and an aura around her that glowed of positive light.
"Yes, Selena?" Taylor answered in response to the loud, overjoy, brunette.
"Do you want to build a snowman?!" Taylor couldn't help but laugh. Selena had an obsession with the movie Frozen, so her asking the question only made her think that Selena was simply quoting the movie.
"No seriously." Travis chimed in finally. He was the most quiet of the three of them. A bit of a shy boy he was, but he always opened up with Taylor and Selena. "It snowed last night. We were thinking about going out and having a snowball fight or something." Taylor still laughed. She hadn't been out of bed yet this morning, so she had no idea what was going on outside of the walls of the bedroom she was assigned to.
"I don't know," Taylor told them, pulling the cover over her more. She was nice and toasty in her bed.
"Aw, come on Tay! It will be fun!" Selena insisted, pulling the covers down. "Come out with us for a few minutes, you can come back in if you're not having fun." Selena had a way of getting Taylor to do things she didn't want to.
"Yeah, come on Tay," Travis replied.
"Ok, ok." Taylor gave in. She sat up and swung her legs from the bed.
"Yay! Yay! Yay!" Selena squealed, jumping around a little. Taylor looked at the two of them, already dressed in their clothing to go out.
"Ok, let me get changed then." She said, finally standing up. She went over to the dresser where most of her things were kept. She pulled out a pair of jeans and a hoodie, throwing both things on over her pajamas, figuring that she needed the layers. She put on her boots over her fluffy socks and shrugged. "Good enough." They all shrugged and headed out of the room, Taylor making a pit stop at the bathroom to do a few things before she headed outside to join her two best friends. When she got outside she saw that there was already a snow angel in the snow, most likely done by Selena, and before she could even think twice, she was being pelted with snowballs. She let out a scream. "Hey!" She ran down the few steps to the ground and over to her friends, trying to tackle both of them to the ground but only succeeding in knocking Selena over. The two girls laughed hysterically as they laid in the snow. Travis stood where she was, just laughing at the girls as they had their moment. Travis picked up some snow and formed it into a snowball and threw it at the girls, which hit Selena in the side of her head.
"Hey!" Selena screamed. Both of the girls looked at least other before they got up and started making snowballs of their own to throw back at Travis. Still laughing as they made their snowballs, the snowball war began, the girls teaming up against Travis. The fight carried on for what seemed like hours, all of them laughing like idiots as they ran around the backyard of their orphanage.
While laughing, Taylor took the last snowball she had in her hand and chucked it at Travis, hitting him in the face. The look on his face when he got hit caused her to double over in laughter. Before she knew it, she found herself laying in the snow with Travis hovering over her. She was so busy laughing that she didn't notice Travis charge towards her. As he looked down at her, her laughs calmed to a giggle. "That wasn't funny, Tay," Travis told her, looking down into her eyes. She had a few tears from all of the laughing she was doing, making the blue hue in her eyes glisten beautifully.
"I thought so." She got out, between giggles. A silence fell between the two of them as they stared at each other. "Why are you looking at me like that?" She asked, her laughter stopping completely.
Travis just shook his head and moved, sitting upright in the snow. "Why didn't you just do it?" Selena asked Travis, causing Taylor to look at her with a confused face.
"What are y'all talking about?" Taylor asked, looking between the two of them.
"I really like you Tay." Travis said outright.
"I like you too, Travis" Taylor told him, still confused at what he was getting at.
"No, he's in love with you! Now kiss so I don't have to hear about how beautiful and wonderful and perfect you are anymore!" Selena exclaimed from where she stood near them.
"You love me?" Taylor asked, looking at him with a little smile on his face.
"Yeah, you're amazing and I always want to protect you," Travis said, looking her in the eyes. He then looked at Selena. "And you too."
"We'll address that later, talk to her." Selena said with a smile on her face. She had been waiting so long for this to happen. Hearing Travis talk about Taylor was such an adorable thing, and there was nothing more she wanted than to see them together.
"You and Sel are literally all I have in this world, but I see you as more than a friend. Like we could get out of here and build a life together and be something. Of course, we'll take the Spanish speaking one with us." Travis looked over at Selena and gave her a smile while Taylor laughed at the wording of his last statement.
"What if we don't work out as more than friends?" Taylor asked him. Something he wasn't prepared for, something he didn't want.
"Then we'll just have to cross that bridge when we get to it." He told her, pushing a piece of her hair from her face. "Will you be my girlfriend?" He looked right into her eyes, searching for an answer before she even said it.
"Yes." She told him, with a smile on her face.
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" Selena cheered from the sideline. She was proud to be their third wheel. She loved the two of them so much and she would do anything for them and seeing them happy just made her even happier than she already was. Travis and Taylor laughed as Travis leaned into Taylor, placed a soft kiss on her lips. They parted seconds later, Taylor wearing a smile on her face. "Finally!" Selena exclaimed throwing one last snowball in their direction, hitting both of them. "Suckers!!!" She screamed before running off back into the house. Taylor and Travis got up off of the ground and ran after her, all of them ready to change out of their wet cold clothing. Maybe the holidays wasn't going to be so bad after all.
