I could feel tears blurring my sight.
I hastily wiped them and held back a sob.
Nelv’s dead body still looked fresh like he just died. I saw the locket Tethra gave to him glinting on his neck. Along with it, was another similarly decorated locket with a ‘T’ inscribed on it.
My hand softly grazed his neck as I unclasped it. I couldn’t face Tethra. I couldn’t tell her that Nelv was her long-lost twin.
At least, the locket could tell her.
But then, I decided to keep it back.
“Guys,” I said, addressing the magicians. “How do we hold Nelv’s funeral in the Monastasian way?”
Rhys O’Shannon, an Irish guy and the most mature-looking person said, “At the beginning of the ceremony, we give flowers to the dead person.”
“Why?” I asked, curiously.
“It’s believed that the fragrance of different flowers veils the reek of blood and sins.” Elin Sparv said.
“The reek of sins can just be veiled?” I asked incredulously.
“No, but it’s just so that he/she can pass the barrier between the living and dead. It’s said that until the body is fragrant, it’s not allowed to be dead.” Zacheus Artino said.
“Once the flowering ceremony is done, we believe that the soul has passed the barrier. Then, we can bury it, burn it or do anything with it.” Loreal Wolff said.
“However,” The soft voice of Khan Tae-woo said. “If the person is a martyr, then his essence is captured through an ancient prayer and sent to the infinite sky. There, it shines for his bravery and his constellation is named after himself.”
“He was a martyr,” Helly softly said.
“Then,” Nicia, a person whom I could call a friend, said as she embraced me. “Diane, this Nelv guy should receive the honour of decorating the Monastasian sky.”
I silently thanked her for her support.
“So, about the flowering ceremony, I think it begins now,” I announced. “Whoever’s interested in giving one of my friends, flowers shall be respected. However, disrespect towards him wouldn’t be neglected. Even if you don’t know him, there’s no reason to disrespect him.”
Some gave me dirty glares; some just rolled their eyes while others smiled at me pitifully.
I didn’t need their pity.
“Dy,” I said. He looked up at me questioningly. “We need to find Tethra.”
“But, we know nothing about her situation.” He said.
After a thought, he said, “Though, guessing from Nelv’s reaction when he was asked about Tethra made me suspect that something must have happened when they were retrieving the Air Stone.”
“I suspected that too,” I told him. “However, only four people went there and none of them can be questioned about that trip.”
“One is immortal and gods know where, one kidnapped, one eternally cursed and almost dead, and the last one dead.” Dylan winced as he counted them with his fingers. “Yeah, I get your point.”
“Let’s ask someone for help,” I said.
He nodded.
Just then, I heard someone say, “Yatkimapi Vadami Tat Aahuya. Flower Basket.”
